  1. Seeing as I could not hope to survive against the wolves in Pleasant Valley long enough for me actually find food and a weapon to defend myself with -- not with all the wolves and the bears around, and without the aforementioned food -- I set about to leave the idyllic looking but homicidal scene. I planned to take the mining tunnel to Coastal Highway, as I had been there before plenty of times. I headed out, leaving the tiny little village behind, hungry and cold, but happy that I had at least found shelter and clothes there. The mining tunnel was nearby, so I thought I'd make it in no time and with little trouble. But I went slightly the wrong way and found myself between a bear sniffling my scent and a wolf blocking my way to where I needed to go. I evaded the bear but caught the wolf's attention. I ran. I ran uphill. The wolf followed, growling and relentless. But I persisted and did make it to the top, to the tunnel entrance before the wolf reached me. In broad daylight, the tunnel had just enough light for me to walk carefully through. The cold receded, but would return, I knew that. The hunger stayed. Once out of the tunnel I risked a steep descent downwards towards the road and towards the small fishing settlements scattered along it. I ended up at the barrack, but found nothing useful. The other standing buildings were nailed shut. Hunger driving me, I headed for the fishing hut. Still nothing. My vision began to blur. The cold was ravaging but the hunger even more so. Desperate, I ran, stumbling and swaying, to the small island and towards the cabin there, hoping. I must have found something there, as I did not wake up dead in the bed I had collapsed on to. My head was still swimming and my stomach was eating itself, but I was still alive. I decided I'd fight. I'd heard the wolves, seen the bear near the island. They might take me if starvation didn't, but I needed to fight. I don't know why. Some instinct probably. I walked to the next fishing hut. I think there was nothing there, so I continued towards the town on the other side of the ice. The northern lights seemed even more colorful, dancing in the sky just as the shoreline was dancing in my eyes. I ran. I got to the first building and found a chocolate bar. I left and ran to the gas station. I found coffee and proceeded to make many cups worth of it and drinking all but one of them. Literally living by the power of coffee! By then I was tired as well and had to sleep. It cleared my head enough for me to find scrap metal and dried guts. I could make a fishing tackle! I was nearly halfway back to the fishing hut when I remembered that while I could make the fishing tackle wherever, I did need a workbench to make the hooks and the lines. Turned back biting back curses and went to make them. Attempt number 2, I reached the fishing up just when my vision began to technicolor again. Set up the oven, cracked the ice with my crowbar, and fished. And ate. And fished. I was still in bad shape but I wasn't hungry, tired, cold or thirsty anymore (though had almost 7 litres of water at the time, so I'd be just stupid if I'd been thirsty). With one cooked fish and two uncooked ones, I started to walk back to the gas station, finally breathing more easily, as I would have a couple days now to recover my strength before I'd need to get back out and find food. Then a wolf attacked and killed me instantly
  2. So what do you guys think? Is TLD a horror game?
  3. So I'm really enjoying the new fishing mechanics, I'm finding that it really opens up the number of possible base locations. I'm currently camped out in the lake cave on Monolith Lake in HRV. I run a 2 tip-up string of fishing holes, hunt ptarmigan and rabbits with FHAs. It also has the moose spawn on the lake. Ive camped out here in the past, but I findbit more enjoyable now as I dont have to search so far from the cave to find enough food to survive long term. As fate would have it, the ability to fish here likely saved my life... I arrived to the cave just after dark and inadvertently disturbed the moose and got my ass stomped. So its been a saving grace to be able to get food literally on my door step. This has officially become my longest lasting run since I started playing TLD when it released on Xbox. I'm currently at about 120 days on vanilla Stalker. Ive also completed SV for the first time on this run. Anyone else found some new places to set up camp long term that the new fishing mechanic makes more survivable than previously?
  4. @Leeanda I like the bigger regions because it takes planning to things. I feel like I'm ML or Milton you have so little space to travel, that a simple trip to a forge doesn't take any time. I like needing to plan a few week excursion just to get stocked. I've also gone from Black Rock to Bleak Inlet all the way out to the Mindful Cabin in FA in a few weeks time in game. And I'm no where near ready to head home to PV. Just seeing what's out there for giggles. I've got no mission in mind. Just face whatever I come across.
  5. Hello fellow Explorers I was thinking about Glimmer Fog. Is that stuff real? In some posts around here and elsewhere it was declared to be somewhat gimmicky and yes, it kinda felt like magic at first, uhm, glimmer. 🙃 But this is TLD, it never went to far with gamey magic, right? So I thought about it and remembered that there is a phenomenon called St Elmo's fire. And I'd like to share my findings (from Wikipedia 🤓 ). Since I feel that Glimmer Fog certainly feels at least inspired by it. During a St. Elmos fire luminous plasma is created by a corona discharge. Some weird corona stuff is happening for sure in our little Great Bear World. As I understand it, this plasma requires some kind of spire, a ships prow or wings of air planes (which we ave quite a few in FA tbf) to form around. It's said to be a blue or violet glow around said spire, that often comes with buzzing sound. It's more like on steroids in TLD, since it's, well, everywhere, but besides that, the description kinda fits. What do you think?
  6. Apart from just using the Survival Sandbox and giving ourselves our own personal challenges, goals, and other "house-rules"... We can also subvert existing challenges in order to essentially create more challenges ourselves. Those challenges that have victory conditions and essentially no time-limiting factor, I think have some interesting potential. A couple of examples to start off with: The Whiteout Challenge... Never "complete" the challenge. Once the "big one" hits, how long can you survive and how many regions can you manage to explore while the perpetual blizzard rages? The Hunted, pt.1... Avoid going to Jeremiah's Cabin (Trapper's Homestead). How long you can survive and how many regions can you manage to explore, while having the Demon Bear relentlessly hunting you down? I've always loved how powerful player choice is for The Long Dark. We can have the ability to rather drastically change our player experience simply in choosing to change the way we play.
  7. Now that the wiki says what the new ones do what’s everyone’s favorite rifle bow or revolver? (mines 100% curators rifle just cause it looks so god damn cool)
  8. I'm going to try my best to summarize issues I've personally had as well as some general thoughts: Non-renewable cooking ingredients - I'm hoping this will be addressed in the future No radial slot for bear-skin, insulated bedroll or skillet - HL has partially acknowledged this Tip-ups seem to break game - The one time I used a tip-up was on an existing game. I entered a building, rested and was unable to exit. Ptarmigans don’t seem to appear on older saves Fishing not working (fished for 12 hours, in 1-hour increments at level 5 fishing with and without a lure and caught zero fish) J key brings up a garbled menu Suggestions: If possible, make regular backups of your saves Avoid fishing of any kind Thoughts: I have to be honest and say I'm somewhat disappointed in the volume of issues. As others, I was extremely excited to play the update, and took the day off work to do so, but as I played, I became disillusioned. I have learned to work around/avoid/ignore the issues as much as possible so that I may continue playing. In fact, as much as I prefer to play my older saves, I am starting a new game while these issues are resolved. Hinterland, I look forward to your resolution of these issues so that we can, unimpeded, enjoy this marvelous game.
  9. Today I noticed that the improved firestarting is no longer listed among the upcoming features of the tales from the far territory. Is it really no longer a part of the roadmap? Because it would be kinda unfortunate that a feature so promising was abandoned because of the time constraints. I don't even know how it was supposed to be improved, but I still feel like I missed out on a better core system.
  10. This suggestion popped into my head for no reason last night while I was sleeping… I literally dreamt (dreamed 🤷‍♂️?) something along these lines. It did not go well, to put it mildly. What is this suggestion, you ask? Harbinger Difficulty “It’s not just that you’re not part of Nature’s plan. You are an annoying stain that she is trying to wring out of a dishcloth.” Starting Gear: None. No clothes, no can, no nothing. Loot Distribution: 10 packs of matches in the world, maximum. Aside from that, no more than a dozen man made items (food, clothing, meds, etc.) will spawn per region. There will be ONE bedroll, ONE lantern, ONE cooking pot, ONE heavy hammer, ONE prybar, ONE hacksaw, ONE mag lens, ONE firestriker, and ONE toolbox spawning across the entire world. Natural Resources: Each rose hip bush, acorn patch, reishi mushroom, piece of birch bark, and cattail has a 1/10 chance of spawning. Sticks, branches, limbs, and stones with also be cut by at least half. Each sapling has a 1/6 chance of spawning. Wildlife: Deer spawn with the rarity of moose. Each rabbit grove will have one rabbit. Replace all normal wolves with Timberwolves, which will be everywhere, with aggression, damage, and spotting range even higher than the maximum the settings currently allow. There will always be an aurora-juiced bear on the map you are in. Not just any bear… the Old Bear. Fishing effectiveness is drastically decreased. Weather: Blizzards and fog all day, every day. Temperatures never rise above -20C. The only time you will get clear skies is with -50C windchill. At night. During an aurora. Oh, and did I mention the glimmer fog? Enjoy . Stats: All meters drain at one arrow above normal (so four-arrows down cold is a possibility). Condition damage due to hunger, thirst, cold, and fatigue is doubled or even tripled. Hypothermia pretty means death in a few seconds. A full 10 hours sleep is impossible because of the accelerated hunger and thirst, so the most condition you can get back per night is about 10%. No condition recovery while awake.
  11. So could it be? First ever NPC in survival? I admit sometimes it does feel a bit lonely, to see another human would be mind blowing! Could it be Methuselah?? What do you guys think?
  12. Just wondering if this is me or if this is systemic.. HItting J to bring up the Journal instead brings up a McClusterF&ck The Condition bar seems smaller While outside, wet clothes continue to freeze even while near a fire and protected from the wind Completely unable to use the RMB via the Radial at all--this includes placing objects from the Radial, or erasing Spray Paint markers Skillet does not appear in the Radial, so you either need to click on an active cook surface to place it, or drop it on the floor and RMB it I have yet to encounter a single Burdock or whatever those new birds are called, and have fully explored Broken Railroad, Mountain Town, Mystery Lake, and Pleasant Valley. Could be bad RNG though.
  13. One of the most infuriating things in TLD is to be casually walking along with a torch, only to have a sudden wind gust blow it out, often while there is a wolf nearby. To remedy this, I suggest a Shielded Torch be added as a craftable/findable item. To craft it, you would need: 1x Storm Lantern Quality Tools 5x Cloth 0.5L Lantern Fuel 7x Scrap Metal 6 hours at a forge The finished item would: Weigh a hefty 2 kg Be capable of burning for two hours Be immune to or at least much less severely effected by wind When it goes out, you can relight it with a match, 5x Cloth, and 0.3L Lantern Fuel. Advantages and disadvantages: + Burns longer than a normal torch + Immune to wind like a lantern + Can be crafted once and then relit + Can light fires like a torch + Can be used to light normal torches + Can be used a a struggle weapon roughly equivalent to the prybar - Very heavy - Very resource intensive to craft - Gives lower warmth bonus than torch - Cannot be thrown, but can be placed like lantern - Cannot frighten wolves (¿or less effective?)
  14. With the Blackrock update having been out for a while now I am not sure how I have not thought of this. Just like how McKenzie starts with a sharpened piece of metal, shanks and shivs should be available to craft. 1 scrap metal, point anywhere with concrete and sharpen for an hour. Low durability make it useless late game, but if knives were harder to get it would be useful. I understand there are the ‘improvised’ tools in game from the forge, but I envision a fire and forget type tool.
  15. Greetings, I am Dubshorts, an independent game developer currently working on a survival game styled after The Long Dark. I want to share a sneak peek of my character's appearance with you, and I hope you enjoy it.
  16. I have been wanting to draw Mackenzie for a long time and finally now I have drawed him. Tell me your opinion of the drawing. It's my first piece of fanart ever. The picture I used as a reference: My finished drawing:
  17. Currently we have one Aurora: ClearAurora. It happens only at night and only when the weather was clear. Id like to see more types. Maybe even make them "evolve" the longer you survive/ the further into Wintermute you get. Would give alot more to the whole "Something is broken" theme that the game runs on (Otherwise known as "its happened before"). Potential Types: Blizzard Aurora Happens only during a blizzard. Makes the snow light up and the other usual bits. This would mostly be a visual difference "The Night Without a Day" This would be a unique Aurora that is extremely rare in Sandbox that makes the Aurora occur for 24 hours. Not daylight. Constant night. Animals are entirely frightened of this Aurora and will run to their homes and cower. Aurora Lightning occurs during this Aurora. This can cause cars to power and move in erratic patterns and cause death should you be caught outside without any protection (Cave or something like that) This would be the only time when extremely odd things can happen, like the Old Bear spawning, Bear and Moose corpses spawning that you can harvest and maybe other things that the team can think up to make this event even more fun This could also be a challenge, to see how long you could survive during an infinite version of this Blinded Aurora This is another unique Aurora. If your outside you wont be able to see anything. Making travel extremely hard. This only lasts for a few minutes to an hour Daytime Aurora Just the standard Aurora during the day And some other types I cant think of. Would also be interesting to be able to make our own.
  18. I was reading over all the Signal Void logs & transcripts found during the tale. It references the mine, which we know will be the new zone coming soon and an experiment going on there. In Interview Transcript 12, it mentions "a shadow": Could it be a reference to the Darkwalker? Perhaps an early, immature manifestation of it?

    Booze

In an island full of rugged backcountry folks, there are bound to be some boozers. What happened to their alcohol? It makes sense that some of it was stashed away, or even if looters took it, then we might find it in their dead bodies. I therefore suggest the addition of three types of alcohol: Whisky (or whiskey, depending on your origin), Brandy, and Moonshine. They would be classified with your other remedies . All boozes are found in “servings” of 0.10L. They would reduce the sleepy eye by 10% and inflict a level of tipsiness, causing varying degrees of lurching while walking. It might also give a tiny boost to condition? The differences would be as follows: Whisky: Gives 5% warmth bonus, will speed up hypothermia recovery by 20%. Brandy: My personal favorite. Gives 10% warmth bonus, speeds up hypothermia recovery by 15%. Moonshine: Double drunkenness, 10% warmth bonus, speeds up hypothermia recovery by 25%.
  20. Today, I found a cured wolf pelt on ‘Loper in the safe at the Old Spence Homestead. That got me thinking: what’s the best loot you guys have found in safes (relative to difficulty, of course)?
  21. Backpacks should be a part of the game, both for survival and wintermute. Wintermute would benefit from a proper backpack system more than survival. They should have their own slot instead of using one of the two accessory slots When you start you have a basic backpack. You have access to the crafting recipe of the improved backpack. The player should have a base carry weight of 10KG +5KG for the well feed status effect. In addition, these backpacks can be dropped. When dropped they turn into containers the player can use to store stuff. This would be useful for making bases outside where container space may be non-existent. While equipped they do not weigh anything and add their respective bonus' to the players carry capacity. When in the inventory they weigh 1KG. Notes: Specialized slots reduce the weight of items in them by 50%. Only the specific item for that slot can be put in that slot. Moose satchel should be on the level on the improved backpack as an alternative recipe Wolf hides could be used in place of the deer hides Stats: Basic Backpack (Starting Backpack): +20KG carry capacity Medium Water Canteen slot Recipe: 1 Cured Deer Hide 2 Cured Gut 5 Cloth Improved Backpack / Technical Backpack(Uncraftable): +40KG carry capacity General specialization Rifle Slot Hatchet Slot Medium Water Canteen slot Recipe: 4 Cured Deer Hide (Main body of backpack) 4 Cured Rabbit Hide (Two specialized slots) 2 Cured Gut 5 Cloth Master Backpack +100 KG carry capacity Extreme survival specialization Rifle Slot Hatchet Slot Crowbar slot Large water canteen slot Recipe (obtained by curing a Moose hide): 2 Cured Moose Hide (Main body of backpack) 8 Cured Rabbit Hide (Four specialized slots) 5 Cured Gut 10 Cloth 5 Metal salvage
  22. I've always loved watching and hearing stories from family about trappers and the lives they used to lead. It is sort of a dying occupation however, and quite frankly I'm not a resourceful enough person to be one in real life, so I figured that I could do it in Canada simulator, the long dark. HRV has been my chosen region, as it is almost void of manmade structures (except the new bunker), and is quite plentiful in wildlife, and already has some established snow shelters as bases along the line. I was just wondering, as I set up for this adventure, if anyone has any tips for it. I made a little route on a map, and the new bunker would be my home base as it has (perhaps spoilers ahead) a workbench, and is in a really great location for doing rounds through HRV. I plan to kill deer and Bears with Vaughn's rifle for food, as well as snare rabbits for supplementary food and gut. I am doing this on my ~55 day run in stalker difficulty, and am gathering gear in the ML trappers cabin to transport through MT to HRV. I have got technical backpack and moose satchel as well as the rifle sling to further decrease the weight of Vaughn's rifle (but I'll bring curators rifle just to put on display). Thanks in advance for any advice!
  23. With the recent additions made to beachcombing (introduced March 30th, 2023), there are many new things to be found when perusing the frozen shorelines of Great Bear, so I wanted to create a place where fellow survivors can share their findings. Here are some interesting things I found beachcombing for the first time since the new update! Survival mode: Stalker Location: Bleak Inlet Washed up Canoe and some arrows. I'll take free arrow heads anyday! Neat little suitcase. Kind of want one now. Large trunk filled with some clothing. Closest thing to a treasure chest! Food and tools. This would be a great find for the start of a new game! Have a great day!

    Food Talk

Dose anyone else feel like they need to add pancakes or waffles for our syrup or flapjacks sounds cool too. And for those pancakes with syrup add the smashed acorns on top. That sounds delicious and amazing. What do you guy think of combining things and hope to add for foods???
  25. So I was attacked by a timber wolf and tracked it down to see where it was going and wait for it to die but when I found it I was very scared and surprised I couldn’t believe it and I could still carve him up and it was freaky 😖 IMG_4191.MOV
