DrMembrane
Dear Everyone,I'm not sure how bear attacks work, is it a quick time event without a prompt or is it just a cutscene? Also, what causes bears to attack? Getting too clsoe to them? Cause Iwas just sleeping on the ground and was randomly attacked by a bear.
Bill Tarling
You can't fight back against the bear (your only real hope, even IRL, would be to curl up and hope they let you live after bashing you around a bit). When a bear spots you, or comes across you (e.g. while you're sleeping), they'll approach and attack to get you out of their territory. The bears will also attack [defend themselves] if you attack them.NOTE: In pilgrim mode the bears will stay clear of you UNLESS you attack them. If you do attack them, then as above they will fight back.
DrMembrane
Yeah, so is there a way to play dead or such? Or is i just luck if it kills you?
Bill Tarling
The bear will usually leave you at 9% or 10%, but if your health is already low or you're going through multiple attacks then you will likely die.
Random Fires
Make damn sure after it mauls you not to move towards it after first attack. First aid and move away. Don't provoke twice.

If you encounter with a grizzly bear, you're right, you must curl up and pray god they let you live or a painless death at least. But if you encounter with a black bear IRL, the first thing you must do is scaring it away. It will probably go away but if this does not work, the only chance you have to survive is fighting back. You know the weak point, its nose. A nice punch or hitting with a stone will work. Briefly, if you try grizzly strategy on blacks, you're a dead man. So you must also fight back in game but you can't unfortunately.
Thelek
Nichulai is quite right. there is a huge difference between black bears and grizzly/kodiak/polar bears, primarily size. a typical black will weigh in at 400 to 500 pounds where a typical griz can tip the scales at well over 1000 pounds. grizzlys are also far more aggressive than blacks. and a black can be fought off, a solid blow to the snout, a few good hits with an edged weapon, or in some cases, simply scaring it will end the encounter. with a grizzly, any encounter will almost always end with the death of the human. as for in game, the bear attack is a cut scene. you can do nothing for about a minute as the bear mauls you then walks away. just firing your rifle near a bear can cause an attack, even if the bear was not the target. and in voyager and stalker modes just being in a bears path can get you mauled. a rule of thumb when dealing with bears is to make best possible use of your surroundings. shoot from inside a fishing hut or from a fallen tree, someplace it cant get to you.
