In an actual survival situation, or really, any situation where you are outdoors with limited artificial light, you pretty much go to sleep when the sun goes down. There is little else to do.

In "middle latitudes" ( I am located at 42N 71W, which is basically "halfway up" the Northern Hemisphere), you can get a rough estimate about how much sunlight you have remaining by holding your hand up to the bottom of the sun, and counting the number of finger-spans it takes you to get to the horizon. Each finger is roughly 15 minutes of usable sunlight. So a whole hand (discounting the thumb) is about an hour

However, in extreme northern/ southern latitudes, the sun stays closer to the horizon for longer, and this gets a little inaccurate. However, use this method when the sun is high in the sky, and you should be good.
