How do I drop starting a fire?

More than once I've been done in because I've tried to start a fire, been told it's too windy, but can't drop the fire wood or anything. Without being able to stop placing the firewood, I can't open a door to get inside or do any other act. Is there a way to cancel the intent to start a fire?

Happened to me a few times as well, I keep trying Esc first but that just brings up the menu... It should cancel the fire placing though, as it cancels just about every other action.
