Question about distracting wolves

I want to know how to distract the wolf from a killed deer so I can harvest food without spending my bullets. I believe its possible to distract wolves with meat since while messing with the controls I dropped some after pressing 4. I also tried to throw a not lit flare but the wolf came direct to me.

There is any good way to distract a wolf from his recently killed deer?

I thought I could save a flare too by throwing it without lit, next time i'll use it. thanks
