But why can't you pre-emptively attack? I followed a wounded wolf who limped along bleeding for ages after a struggle. I should have been able to pounce and finish him off before he got too far. Instead I foolishly followed him close to another who did for me instead ...

Indeed - if you are quick enough on the draw, you can swap single blows with the wolf.  Most times you are left with 85% condition or more and no injuries, while the wolf runs off wounded as usual.  If you land the first blow just right, you will sustain no condition loss or injuries.

100% Agree, and sometimes appear a banner with "laceration" or something like that, but when you check your conditions everything is correct.
