Can't pick up a brand

I had a camp fire outside of the Camp Office (CO in Mystery Lake) and used a burning stick to light a fire inside the CO. I then dropped the remaining burned out brand. But once I wanted to move it to some other place I noticed that you can't pick it up again.

It is possible though to right-click on it and move it to another place. But that method does not let you take it outside of the CO because you can't leave the CO while the move-it action is still active.
