(The Wild Eight)-Wilderness Survival

Recommended Posts

(Edit:  Feeling bad about my harsh initial comments of the game I bought it and gave it a try.)

An Alaskan wilderness survival game called The Wild Eight that has a similar visual style and concept to Long Dark.  The story involves a plane crash in the Alaskan wilderness.   There are some differences, it's POV is top-down.

It has potential, but the game mechanics need work.  You can die of starvation within 24 hours of eating, for example.  On the plus side, a possibly paranormal sub-plot has been hinted at and it has multi-player.

It's a very early work in progress so only time will tell what it will be like.

Here's a let's play video...similar yes...but it can't light a firestriker/wooden match/cardboard match/magnifying glass equivalent to the mood and atmosphere in TLD.

Maybe the guy shouldn't have also been named William though, seems to be too much of a coincidence....

Hey everyone, we recently had a similar conversation over on the steam forums about this and other games with themes similar to The Long Dark, so sorry if this post seems familiar to anyone who participates over there.

We appreciate the concern, but we don't consider The Wild Eight to be  "rip-off" of us or anyone else. It's not unusual for games in an emerging genre to have have some overlapping elements, and the developers are clearing doing many things differently from us. Also, Hinterland doesn't think it's a bad thing if other creators are interested in making games about trying to survive in a winter wilderness -- it's a large topic, and an interesting one!

Discussions of other games and how they compare and contrast to The Long Dark is welcome, although we do ask that posters try to keep the conversation constructive so it doesn't devolve into advertising or negative comments. Thank you everyone for your help with this!

Also, if you ever are concerned about a product that seems to be using our work or trademark without permission, you can also send us an email at info@hinterlandgames.com so we can take a look.

I don't think that's necessary -- conversations about different games are welcome, we just want participants to help keep them constructive. We've seen topics like these get pretty volatile elsewhere and want to avoid that if we can. If you're worried, maybe just update the thread title to something more general.

EDIT: Moving the thread to the Games.
