Meathim
So, one thing. The old man's beard lichen is edible and a staple in winter survival (at least if you live in Northern Sweden). Requires boiling a few times. It is a lesser idea. What really should be a thing though is having a knife and/or axe should increase your fire making skill, for obvious reasons. Make it, say, 5% each for the knife and the axe, for a 10% total if you own both of them. For realism, it probably should be 7% and 3% for the knife and axe respectively, because it is easier to cut the wood up small with a knife and if you have birch bark it is easier to scrape it with a knife. Maybe add a formula that changes how big a boost you get depending on the sharpness of the tool.
Bjern
Would be a realistic additional use for lichen, altho it would still be preferable to use it for First Aid, if you are starving it would be better to have that option that could keep your character going for that little bit longer. When the game turns into a life-or-death situation for your character, when you are desperately scavenging whatever you can to survive long enough to get to a safe place, it gets really intense...Just what one would expect in a survival genre game! I think more versatility for some items could add to this, and edible lichen sounds just like what would do this.
CalNieDaGtarGuy
I like this idea along with the aforementioned pine needle tea that people have suggested. There's that Steam achievement about living off the land for 25 days or so, and more natural food options would be great.
