Chapter one: The Telescope

“In a mad world, only the mad are sane.”

-Akiro Kurosawa

“You know, I’m glad you decided to do this, Isaac” Jessica said as she wrapped her arms around the man's shoulders, “We all need a break sometimes.” Isaac said and he poured himself a bowl of cereal, “You know what? I think that we should bring the telescope to the beach with us, the kids will love it.” Jessica giggled as she set her chin on top of his head, “I'm sure they will, they always liked the stars.” Isaac put another spoonful of cereal in his mouth, “I taught them as much as I know” They both chuckled, “We both know that an astrophysicist like you would need to know a little more than what stars are made of.” Jessica said as she poured herself a cup of coffee. Isaac didn’t respond, he was engrossed in doing “The Kernal Krunch crazy maze” on the back of the cereal box. Jessica looked at Isaac, wondering why he does such trivial things. Isaac was obsessed with details, not to such a point to have a mental condition, but enough to get strange looks from Jessica. Isaac set the box down and rose from his seat. He was a rather tall man, standing a little over six feet, he sported a full head of solid black hair despite being a thirty five year old father of two.

"So, do we take the car or the subway?" Jessica asked. "Subway - gotta protect our environment!" Isaac laughed in response. "Alright then" Jessica chuckled. "I'll go get the kids ready." Half an hour later, the family entered the nearest subway station. Isaac bought tickets for the four of them and led his family down the escalator. "There's so many people here" exclaimed Elliot, his son. "Look, Daddy!" "Haha, yeah, I see 'em." Isaac answered and pet his sons head. The subway wasn't terribly cramped, but they still had trouble finding a seat. Luckily, a young man wearing a hoodie and shades gave up his seat for them, stating that "families should be together". Isaac was delighted to see that at least some younger people still had a modicum of respect. In the middle of the ride, however, something happened - the lights in the subway began to flicker and the train car itself was rapidly loosing speed. Some people who weren't used to public transport failing very often nervously checked their smartphones - only to realize that said phones were dead. "What's going on Daddy?" Elliot asked. "Just some wires malfunctioning." Isaac answered, not fully persuaded by his own words. Seconds later, all hell broke loose - phones caught on fire, lamps exploded and showered the commuters in glass shards, the train stopped in the middle of the tunnel. People began to scream, and the hooded man who offered Isaac his seat earlier began to sweat profusely. Shortly later he began to kick the subway car's doors to no avail. Others followed him, and Isaac felt that there was a mass panic in the making. "Calm down everyone!" he shouted into the darkness, but he was ignored. It was then that two things happened simultaneously - someone emptied a fire extinguisher on a burning smartphone, someone else fired a gun into the subway's doors. Panic ensued, and while trying to protect his wife and children from the stampeding mass of people, something hit him on the back of the head and darkness encroached upon his field of view until he fell into a merciful sleep....

Chapter Two: Out of the Darkness, Into the Dark

"A man who won't die for something is not fit to live."

-Martin Luther King Jr

Minutes, or maybe even hours later, Isaac woke up, covered in extinguisher-foam, glass splinters and droplets of blood, not all of them his own. Isaac opened his eyes and sat up, a dull pain coursed back and forth in his head. The vacant train car was black as night and there was pure, unadulterated silence. Isaac reached into his back pocket and pulled out his lighter, with a click, a small flame illuminated the immediate area. The first thing he noticed was his telescope, ravaged by the footsteps of panicked citizens. He rose to his feet and quickly regretted the decision, the dull pain he felt turned to a sharp stabbing sensation in his forehead and he became dizzy from the effort, he grabbed a seat to regain his balance. He made his way to the front of the train, hoping someone could explain what happened, but train car after train car, he was greeted by the silent reminder he was alone in the dark underbelly of Shepardsville. He continued forward into the conductors cabin. There he saw an old man, sitting in the chair, he reached for his shoulder and the man collapsed to the floor, his shirt torn open, revealing a pacemaker that burned in his chest, showing itself through the holes of burnt skin near his heart. Isaac jumped back, horrified. This was... different. This wasn't merely an accident anymore.

He needed to find his family.

"Jessica? Elliot? Samantha?" he shouted into the darkess, but fate did not bestow him an answer. He knew he had to move on, so he slowly walked towards what he thought was the door with outstretched arms. His boots crushed glass splinters below his feet, the only noise in the subway now devoid of any life besides him. He could have sworn that the thing he almost tripped on was a bullet casing. Around fifteen minutes later, he saw lights coming up from somewhere and knew that this was the next subway station. And indeed, a bright light guided him to the exit stairs...

Isaac knew exactly what happened the second he emerged from the cold, dark subway. He saw  lights in the sky, not stars mind you, but an Aurora. Like a blanket worn by God, it was draped over the Midwestern sky of Sherpardsville. He knew that something was very, very wrong, things like this have happened before. But Isaac knew this was going to be very different, and, while the Aurora shifted in the night sky, Isaac sat against a wall and wept, he knew that the earth was broken, and his family was gone, he was alone in a world that would soon become a war zone. His weeping was cut short when a Molotov cocktail shattered on the street, flames erupted and whipped in the cold wind. He dove behind a nearby dumpster and glanced over the side. Two men were unleashing hell, they unholstered there pistols and shot into the dark, a machine gun crackled into the night and struck one of the men.

Isaac propped his back against the dumpster, hoping the man quickly approaching wouldn't notice him, unfortunately, the man ran into him, making them both fall onto the brick. Isaac, in a panic, reached for a bottle and slammed it against the mans head, it did not break, however, it gave Isaac enough time to get onto his feet. The man, a heavily built Latino with tattoos spanning across his entire body, reached for his gun that was tucked into his pants. Isaac, in response, but all of his weight into his foot and slammed it against the mans shin. The man buckled and let out a furious moan. The brief moment that the man was doubled over, Isaac slammed his right fist into the back of his head. It glanced along the side of his shaven scalp and the man used his low position as an advantage. He slammed his fist into Isaac's gut. Isaac, now imbued with extraordinary focus, felt the side of the mans gun tap the back of his head. He whipped around and grabbed the gun by the barrel. The man fired a shot, and the recoil mechanism pinched Isaac's index finger, slicing it to the bone. Isaac, now on one knee, hurriedly ran his free hand across the ground, feeling for something to defend himself with. After his thumb grazed a stray brick, Isaac brought it up and clacked it against the mans fingers. With an audible "Crack!" The gun flung itself across the alley and slid a small distance against the brick. Isaac rose to his feet and grasped the mans hand, which now had two fingers that were broken and bleeding.

With strength and resilience that only the insane and the addicted could muster, the man almost completely ignored the searing pain in his hand as he lifted his other fist to smack Isaac in the face. Isaac could barely dodge the blow which would surely have knocked him out for good and ended his journey short. He managed to bring up his arm just in time so that the next blow wouldn't hit his face either, but his elbow took the brunt of the strike's force. With his other hand, Isaac was desperately feeling around him, letting his survival instincts take the better of him. He quickly found a two by four near him and swung it it at his attacker whose hand he still grasped. It cracked against his skull, nearly unphased, he screamed through his mouth full of blood "I'm gonna kill you for this, pendejo!"
"I just want to find my family, I'm not your enemy!" Isaac replied and tried to kick the attacker's shin. His kick connected, but apparently didn't cause too much damage or pain. His attacker, however, struck Isaac's stomach as if in retaliation and hit, launching Isaac to the ground once more. The man towered over Isaac, Isaac felt a large shard of the two by four brush his hand. He grasped it with white knuckles and when the man launched forward. Isaac used the flat of his palm and slammed nearly the entirety of the shard into the mans eye socket. Warm blood began to spew from the mans face and his entire body writhed from the attack. He fell on his back, clutching the shard that was embedded in his eye. Isaac Grabbed the brick from earlier and with one swift strike onto the top of the wooden shard. Ended the mans life.

Isaac looked down at his hands, his clothes were soaked in blood and his hands were stained red. He felt like a monster, and honestly, at this point, no one could argue with that thought. Isaac ran his hands along the man, trying to avoid the blood on his clothes, which, to his dismay, was impossible. He found a few stray bullets in his pockets and was too disgusted to keep searching the corpse, which was now forming a pool of blood that soaked through Isaac's jeans. He then grabbed the gun on the other side of the alley and fled into the night, trying to outrun his fear, to no avail.

Chapter Three: The Switch

We become what we think about.

-Earl Nightingale

Isaac limped through the alleyways to avoid the panic that was ensuing on the city streets. His vision was blurred from the burning tears. He thought of his family, and listened to the gunshots and yelling, “I may never see them again.” He thought to himself. Isaac was alone in his thoughts, and at this time, he wished he wasn't so observant of details. He remembered Jessica's freckles, all one hundred and sixty seven of them, he remembered Elliot's voice, still high pitched from his youth, and Samantha's fiery spirit, and youthful curiosity. It was all too much for Isaac, he fell in grief and his dried tears were made fresh once again.

Isaac sat against a wall, worn out from his sadness. He was startled by a voice in the dark, "Is he dead?" He became stiff with fear, and almost impulsively reached for his newly acquired gun. There was a long pause, "I don't think so." A low, thick voice said in reply. Isaac waited for what seemed like days, "Let's leave him be." The voice in the night said. Soon after, Isaac heard two sets of footsteps clack against the stone. It was at this moment Isaac realized he had to get to high ground, fast.

After pacing down the same ally for some time, Isaac turned left to be greeted by a street, he looked behind him only to see the same thing. Vacant cars lined the streets and heavily armed men where pacing over the tops of them. Isaac inhaled deeply, when there was a delay in the row of men, Isaac sprinted forward and dove under one of the cars. Seconds later, Isaac heard the warping of metal as boots crossed over the tops of the automobiles. Isaac began to crawl under the bellies of the cars. When crawling, Isaac's wounds were beginning to show themselves with hot pain. Isaac bit his lip, hoping to find somewhere to at least cover his wounds. When he made it across, Isaac almost found it coincidental that a women's lingerie store was directly in front of him. He silently made his way to the back entrance and pushed on the door. Had the alarms been operational, Isaac would be in prison for pantie snatching, but it was a new era where only the most primitive forms of security where operational. Isaac made his way to the managers office. He turned on the light switch out of habit, only to be greeted by the same darkness. The small med-kit within had a few small band-aids and some antiseptic. Isaac then used the padded Bras to cover most of his wounds. Isaac remembered hearing that the material that bras are made of are somewhat anti bacterial, even to the point that it can make water almost "safe" to drink. This encouraged Isaac to stuff his pockets with bra pads until they bulged. He left in a hurry after hearing a gunshot that was rather close. He made sure to turn off the useless light-switch, then realized that he needed to break from the habit of relying on electricity, which would be a very difficult habit to break indeed.

Chapter 4: The Stars of Eden
“When it is dark enough, you can see the stars.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson

Isaac clambered up a fire exit, too exhausted to find a better building to hide within. With each level he ascended. He peered over the side to see if anyone was lingering in the vacant apartment building. He continued upward, trying his best to keep silent on the metal grate. His blood soaked garments were starting to form Crimson gel that glistened in the light of the moon. Isaac tore of his shirt and threw it over the edge in disgust. It hit the pavement below with a sickening noise that Isaac could only relate to the scooping of gelatin. He continued upward, the wind of the night cooled him off and even gave him comfort. Isaac realized he would have to appreciate small things like these to a far greater degree.

He made his way to the top to be greeted by a myriad of stars that revealed themselves in the absence of the city light. Isaac gasped, the sky was beautiful, it gave him strength to push forward. He was in a world that became one with hell, but hell does not have nearly as beautiful of a sky. Isaac made his way across the rooftop and carefully opened the fire exit, flinching from an imaginary alarm that Isaac thought would ring. He made his way down the staircase, contemplating which apartment to take. He then smiled for the first time in hours after realizing something. He was in one of the most high end apartment buildings in the city, he read in a magazine that the penthouse suites in this building cost upward of six million dollars. His grin turned sour, however, when he realized a top notch building like this would attract looters. Isaac thought long and hard, "Only take what you need" he thought to himself as he pushed open the door.

The inhabitants must have left in a panic, because Isaac saw the shelves still food within and clothes riddled the floor. Isaac locked the door behind him, he emptied his pockets from the bra pads and peeled off his clothes. He looked down at his body, his body was covered in blood from head to toe. Isaac ran to the shower and turned it on. The water came out in a rather weak stream, but it was running. He stepped in and rinsed off his body, it was frigid, but he'd rather be cold than to have blood from a drug addict inside his body. He dried himself off and bound himself in an embroidered robe. He realized a lot of work needed to be done to make this penthouse safe from looters. So he made the conclusion that before he commenced his pilfering. He would barricade the hell out of the place.

He was very tired, but he had incentive to get working. He began to move a majority of the furniture to the foyer entrance and made sure every way to enter the penthouse was barricaded. While that was adequate too keep looters out of the front entrance, Isaac realized he wasn't going to be dealing with idiots. He scoured the area for a toolbox, after finding one, Isaac had a rather good idea. He began to line the entrance facing walls with all of the doors in the house that he unhinged from every room, making the entire apartment into one giant plaza. He then screwed the four corners of each door into the wall, using lubricant he found in the bathroom cabinet to speed up the process of fixing the doors into place. After hours of hard labor. Isaac stepped back. The doors would provide an extra layer of protection if the looters decided to bust down the walls. This posed a small problem, however. This meant the only way to get in and out of the penthouse would be the east facing fire escape, "you can never be too careful" Isaac muttered to himself.

Chapter Five: Orange

“There is the sky, which is all men's together.”

-Euripides

Isaac busied himself by binding his wounds with gauze he found in a medicine cabinet. The man was worried mainly about his finger, which was sliced open to a point that it showed the bone beneath. There wasn't anything sterile enough to stitch with, so he applied antiseptic, bound his finger, and hoped for the best. After tending his wound, he began to eat all of the food that would perish within a day or two. He gorged himself on watermelon and 3 cartons of melted ice cream, washing it all down with milk that was still cold to the teeth. It was a rather unconventional breakfast, But it would suffice. After all he went through, Isaac still took pleasure in the minute things he witnessed going on around him. The apartment began to flood with orange and the dust floating in the room showed itself in airy wisps that were carried in any which direction. Isaac realized small things like the dust in the fresh orange dawn kept him alive. Details are what kept him going before the fall, so Isaac was damn sure his appreciation for details would stay with him. Even in this new and dangerous world.

The man had little knowledge of guns, however, he was not completely incompetent with them. He knew it took 9mm caliber ammunition. He quickly realized it may have sustained damage when it slid across the pavement. He unloaded the gun and slid the firing mechanism back. He chuckled when he found a strip of his bloodied skin stuck in the slide. After cleaning the gunk out of the pistols main area, he clicked the stray bullets into the magazine and slid it back into the firearm. He counted his bullets, the man would have twelve chances to decide fate. He set the gun on the table. Isaac began searching the apartment for more ways to better his chance at surviving in a world ruled by fate alone.

Chapter 6: The Ignition

"Sometimes it requires more courage to live then to die"

Seneca

The only thing that scared Isaac more than the looters that roamed the broken streets were the authorities trying to stop them. To his dismay, Isaac realized he would have to worry about both groups for different reasons. This is when Isaac realized stealth was a necessity, not a choice. He needed to stock up on supplies for his makeshift fortress. He grabbed a small daypack from the closet and descended the fire escape, he waited hours to be cloaked in the darkness of the night. As he climbed down, his body tensed every time a gunshot broke the thick silence within his mind, making his body stiff with worry the entire way down.

He looked up. Above his head the colorful wavy lights of the aurora were still keeping the world in it’s capricious grip and gave the city a sinister green hue. He could see just enough to get around, and could vanish fairly easy into the shadows of the night as he walked out of the alley into the street. It was deserted. Garbage, glass, shell casings, even a little blue toy car littered the streets. “Elliot had a car like that”, he thought and he felt his heart sank. What happened to his little boy, his family? He would find them, but first he needed to stay alive in this jungle. He needed supplies, and fast! After walking a few blocks, the weather seemed to be changing. He felt an icy wind sticking up and little snowflakes came whirling down. “It seems it’s going to be a lot colder soon” he mumbled as he quickened his pass.

He stopped, was  that a fire, a torch in the distance? Isaac walked quickly to the nearest alley to hide. Better not to be seen at this point. He pushed his body against the wall, as he heard people coming closer. Some were shouting and then the rattling sound of an automatic weapon. He waited for the people approaching, aware of the cold steel from the Beretta in his hand.  It seemed like a group of people. How many? Five, six? He looked around the corner, it was obvious the authorities lost control in this part of town. “Better make my way through the alley’s and stay off the streets for now”, he thought as he walked further into the alley. He had to hurry up, snow was falling faster and he was aware he needed warmer clothes soon. Suddenly he almost tripped over a cat that came running out of a building. The backdoor was on a crack. He looked at the van parked close by. “Da Vinci’s Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria”, he read. Immediately his stomach made a loud noise, he smiled. He never could resist Italian food! He went through the back door and shut the door behind him. Slowly making his way through the kitchen to the restaurant to make sure it was empty.

He grabbed a candle from a table and found a lighter behind the bar. As he lit the candle , he saw the light reflecting in the bottles. He grabbed a bottle of his favorite brand of whisky and put it in his bag as he walked towards the kitchen.  After searching the kitchen he found some dried sausages, parmesan cheese, bread, tinned tomato sauce, dried pasta. But more important he found a good knife that he wrapped carefully in a towel with a wet stone. He even found a small lightweight torch used for caramelizing sugar on crème brûlée desserts, and also a can of fuel.  That would come in handy if he needed a fire. He stuffed his bag with the food and the supplies and made one last peak into the restaurants office. There was a map of the city on the wall with little darts marking regular pizza ordering clients. Isaac wiped the darts of the map and tore it of the wall. A map was exactly what he needed! When he opened the drawer of the desk he was surprised to find a few hundred dollars. “Those people really must have left in a hurry!” he said to himself ,hen he put the money in his pocket. It would probably be worthless by now, but he could always use it as tinder.

But I'm afraid this story is done for now.... Unfortunately @Docterrok mentioned yesterday he's done with the forum/game (just for now I hope!).

He was the initiator of this story, @Wastelander and me just contributed some pieces. Wastelander has written his own fan-fic, it's great! You should read that too! (-> http://hinterlandforums.com/index.php?/topic/11387-the-longest-dark/) and I am not going to continue "The White Shroud" by myself as is not my story, it's Doc's...

Let's hope Doc comes back after a while, I know he has great ideas for the story.

Chapter 7: The Downpour

You pray for rain, you gotta deal with the mud too. That's a part of it.

-Denzel Washington

To say that the rain that followed was a gentle pitter-patter was a serious understatement in Isaacs eyes. It was rain that pelted against the window, flashes of booming thunder, hail, and floods that Isaac saw sweep cars down the crowded streets below.

He was stuck in his home, reading all of the magazines that littered the bathroom floor. He read about the past life, it was only a day since the fall, but Isaac knew it was the beginning of the era of chaos... the era of the dark.

Isaac heard a noise disturb the rain pelting against the window. He stood up and reached for his gun. Warily, he made his way to the source of the shuffled noise. He peered into a guest bedroom, and a frightened cat exchanged him a single glance and hid under the bed. Isaac smiled, it would take some work, but Isaac knew he just found a friend. Isaac peered under the mattress, a beautiful savannah cat looked at him again and let out a hiss and a growl. Isaac ran back to the kitchen and got some of the last remnants of perishables. Slowly, but surely, the cat made its way out from under the bed to eat. Isaac looked at the cat, "I know how you feel buddy, I know how you feel..."

Chapter 8: Ice

You can't tie a rope around the ice sheet. You can't build a wall around the ice sheets.

-James Hansen

The ice came... the flood that preceded it became solid to the core. Isaac saw his breath form plumes of vapor with each ragged inhalation. He held the cat for warmth, hoping that it ate enough to love him. He made a decision, he was going to burn things, quite a lot of things, in fact. He tore apart a large majority of the furniture, not only in his apartment, but the ones next to it. He gathered an enormous amount of reclaimed wood and let it blaze on the kitchen tile. The stone floor warmed and Isaac fell upon its surface, imagining the warmth of Jessica beneath his cheek. He shed tears upon the ground, feeling embittered by there absence. It was at this time that Isaac realized he may never see his family again. He paced across the kitchen, considering ending his own life or living in misery. The choice was made by the flip of a worn coin, to Isaacs dismay, it landed on heads, he took courage from that coin flip, deciding that he was going to help as many people as he possibly could. So help him god.

Chapter 9: Exploration

"Not all who wander are lost."

-Tolkien

Isaac clambered down the fire escape, hoping not to get detected by the bands of marauders that passed underneath. He made his way out of the alleyway and sprinted to the frozen yogurt place that was across the street. The windows were broken and glass strewn about like crystal on the pavement. He entered quickly, hoping to find more food for his fortress, he only found a can of Stacys grape soda and a few sugar cones, but hell, it was something. He ran out of the building and sauntered to the squat brown building next to it. Each step felt heavy and warm, he grew nervous even from the slightest sound. He entered the building and saw bodies piled high, nearly up to the ceiling, there stench hidden by the cold. He averted his eyes and vomited, he then realized vomiting was a bad idea in his predicament. In horror, he sped back home, the afterimage of corpses fresh in his mind.
