Tool repair to include both parts and sharpening

Axe

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking about how we repair tools such as axes, saws, hammers and knives in the game. The concept is about incorporating an element of repair using parts as well as sharpening for improving the condition of tools. This can be explained more simply by using the following example. The axe can be repaired by replacing its handled (fir wood) but this will only increase the condition of the tool to 40% (or any value), in order to improve the condition of the axe further you must use a whetstone to sharpen the blade.

The amount of repair/sharpening would be different for each tool, for example, the hammer would not require sharpening and only repair as it currently is. Repairing the knife handle would increase its condition only up to 20% since the blade remains dull, further improving its condition requires sharpening with a whetstone. Repairing the saw would increase its condition up to 80%, further improvement requires sharpening of the saw blades teeth.

The reason this has been suggested is based on the fact that currently the condition of certain tools, like the axe can only be improved using sharpening. Realistically it is the handle that gets damaged much like the hammer, replacing the handle would not effect the quality of the blade and therefor the improvement in condition is limited (40% or whatever values you want really).

Any thoughts on this?

Maybe they should be separate things? Like, if the axe wood (handle) got damaged you would take longer to chop something and would also waste more calories, with this being independent from the blade status. Therefore you would have to repair it's handle and also sharp it.

What if one of the things you could make at the forge were a double bit axe head and a splitting maul head? What if you could also forge and craft a cross cut saw blade and handle? This would give you a useful tool for harvesting larger quantities of wood and even other tools that could be used during extended storms where  you had to have a really large supply of wood in order to survive. Currently internal temperatures are not tied to the external temperature however if they were coupled, firewood would become a much more critical resource and you would need to forge the necessary tools early on and lay in a large supply of wood and food against the week long storm which one could survive only by using a snow shelter and temporary outside fires which were really only possible in one or two locations in all the maps. Discovering those locations would be part of the long game strategy.
