It's all about....Fallout ;)

@cekivi

Good morning from Yokosuka :)

You said:

"Fallout 3 was good... but New Vegas was way better. Lots of real world locations and the locations in the game felt more lived in (e.g. farms to support New Vegas casinos)."

I think NV was *very* hit & miss. They did some things soooooo much better than FO3 (hardcore mode's "needs & wellness," reputation system, disguise system, animal variety) but I could just not like the storyline and the Wild West atmosphere.

I came into it sincerely *wanting* to love it but ...in a nutshell, after the 2nd playthru I uninstalled it, never to return.

Now after playing FNV and recognizing the strong points listed above, I found the mods that add all those into FO3 and, once added, made it a far better experience.

I have to say, FO3's *atmosphere* is what I found I like the most.

Because gameplay wise (especially because of Hardcore Mode) NV blows FO3 out of the water. But adding a mod to put Hardcore Mode in FO3, I found the experience much more intriguing and addicting.

I realize "different folks, different preferences" but since I think you're also a fan of the series, thought it'd be interesting to talk about :)

Id have to agree with you there @WastelandWatcher. I also thoroughly enjoyed FO3 over NV because of said atmosphere and story in NV was bleh... Liked hunting down Benny or whatever but was pretty much over it afterwards. Might have something to do with the fact I grew up in the desert but still... I enjoyed the locale of the Capital Wasteland.... Lets just not get started on the huge disappointment that is FO4 v_v

@TLD Survivalist  initially, I thought the story was an interesting take on things because you start out*not*as a vault dweller but as "someone from the outside."

I wasn't really into the whole desert thing but gave it an open mind, initially.

It really started to go south with the Caesars legion who wore football gear that was basically bulletproof.  Guys wearing football helmets were getting sniped in the head multiple times and not going down. Really disappointing.  If Obsidian Entertainment had written them as having found, for example, a military cache full of power armor, then I would've forgiven it.  Because that would make sense.  But they were basically bulletproof "Indians." Nonsense that really deflated my interest in the game, unfortunately.

The Old World Blues goofiness also really pressed my buttons the wrong way. It was far too "twilight zone" for my taste. That being said, I also can't stand Mothership Zeta.

Reason I like the original Fallout and FO3 (Excepting mothership zeta) was that all the science fiction in it has a somewhat feasible fake science  background which makes it interesting.

However, one thing I really appreciate New Vegas for is that it was my very first survival game experience and I've been a fan of survival games ever since :)

True enough I thought the beginning was neat cause of how you were "put down" and esentially come back for the chip but as you said with the "football legion" the story just fell flat for me...The survival/hardcore aspect was incredible but unfortunately I didnt fully enjoy NV in its glory... Im trying to scour through my brain thinking of what my first survival game experience was but all I can seem to come up with is survival horror aspect...Which would have to be RE4 but not that scary so.... Dead Space? Having to eat drink and rest tho?? Id have to say NV was it as well, tho it was short lived... Nothing I can think of is nearly as survivalish (real word???) as TLD... I started to think of MGS3 but thats just sneaking around in the woods blending... Sure you gotta eat but thats it. That being said Im glad I gave this take on a survival game a chance because it is surprisingly satisfying and addictive

 @TLD Survivalist

Yes,  very, very satisfying! Not at all a surprise to me:  it was exactly what I was looking for :)

Especially after the sore disappointment of F04. But I won't get into it.  I don't even like talking about that game.  It annoys me almost as much as Siri's voice "recognition."  I will never buy another Apple product. Done with that! Uh oh, starting to rant...

Anyhow, back to topic.  In my book, you need food, water, & sleep at a bare minimum to even call it a survival game.   Anything else is just fake, and I lose interest pretty quickly. It's the reason I only buy one, maybe two at the most, games a year.

Everything else sucks because it's all a rehash of something I've already done ( gaming since the days of Atari 2600).

So when I found the mods that turned Fallout 3  into a post apocalyptic survival role-playing game (and a few other mods that added more simulated realism), it was just the most amazing thing.  So much so that I played it pretty much nonstop from 2012 until the end of 2015.

I still play it every now and then when I get that "science fiction post apocalyptic itch." ^_^

Right... Yeahh FO4 hurt me on the inside, BADLY!!! Bethesda just dropped the ball hard in this case... End of story... Unfortunately, console gaming has been most of my experiences so I cant indulge on the mod topic but i can imagine... Barely, hah

Plus I started on the SEGA Genesis in my earlier days... Im just glad that the preview was well worth it. Seeing as how I was strapped for cash and never really gave a "Game Preview" a chance. I didnt wanna waste 20 bucks on a game I wouldnt enjoy. And boy was I in for a real treat, unfortunately less than a week later and TLD is on sale for like 20% off or something. Ugh, I hate it when that happens (almost always happens when I buy ANY game from Microsoft Marketplace)

"Hurt bad." Yes, that pretty much sums up my disappointment. Ugh.
And I feel your pain on sales schedules. I bought TLD and two weeks later there was a 50% (30%?) off sale. But, honestly I don't mind a bit. This alpha game puts so many finished titles to shame and is so worth the $20 asking price that here I am, more than six months later, still playing it almost daily!

Sega Genesis. Wow that brings back memories! That & the Super Famicom (Super Nintendo) were the last consoles I bought. After I played Doom 2 and Command & Conquer on a friend's laptop, I bought one myself the following month, sold my consoles...and never looked back.  The best gaming decision I ever made :)

I hope you can experience what mods do for games someday soon. It really can be amazing.

FO4 is getting some mods from the PC community to Microsoft... So were getting kind of a taste for it but yeah this *alpha* game is alot more than you could ask for for only 20 dollars as compared to like what you said, other games that are the "Final Product" and alot of them fall short

@Wasteland Watcher: Yeah, not Friday here yet :)

It's interesting though that you're a fan of the original Fallout games but still prefer Fallout 3 over New Vegas. Now, Fallout 3 was a good game but I never felt it was a Fallout game. The gameplay was fine, the quests interesting and there's enough there to keep you interested but... I thought it was rather flat. Especially the role playing. I could nuke Megaton and get back to perfect Karma by giving some beggars water over and over again. Megaton was supposed to be a city but near as I could tell there was no reason for it to exist: no farms, industry, etc. I really, really missed the black humor and consequences that original titles had and what moral systems were in the game were very black and white.

For me, Fallout New Vegas very much scratched that itch. I was thrilled the first time I saw the NCR because I could see what happened to the faction from Fallout 2. Especially how the problems your character saw then have only gotten worse. Faction reputation, wonderful shades of grey for decisions, a "living" world (the support structures to justify having a city) and the references to the original games were amazing. Plus, I really enjoyed exploring the Mojave Desert. The Capitol wasteland just felt really crowded and kinda small. That's not to say New Vegas is without fault. Caesar's Legion was a big missed opportunity to really have "evil" be a valid role playing option but at least the option to join the bad guys was there even if it wasn't very good. You couldn't exactly join the Enclave after all.

Lastly, I normally don't bother with mods. I tried a few (before New Vegas) and it didn't really liven up Fallout 3 for me. From what you both describe Fallout 3 is awesome if it was more like New Vegas. So why not play New Vegas? :silly:

Like you said, everyone's looking for different things. I wanted a Fallout game with modern mechanics that had the gameplay and humor of the originals. New Vegas had that for me but not Fallout 3. And, judging by what I've heard online, that was a very good thing since it saved me from pre-ordering Fallout 4! ^_^

Yeah I muffed up bad with preordering FO4 and ontop of that I got the season pass too. First and last time ill do the whole season pass thing... And @cekivi as far as my goin in NV was also short lived cause at the time I was sharing my console which mainly meant I rarely got to play but rather watched alot so it was jaded before I even got to start. As for the original fallout I never got to experience it unfortunately... Have heard nothing but good things about it

And its only Thursday?? where im at soo mer... @Wasteland Watcher

I think @Wasteland Watcher is in Japan if I remember so on the other side of the date line versus North America :)

The original Fallout games are very good and they've aged quite well. Sadly, the first time I played them I used a walkthrough so a lot of the cool hidden things I didn't experience since I was expecting them. Mainly because when I first loaded the game I had no idea what I was doing! I had borrowed a copy from a friend and he didn't have the manuals explaining how to play :silly:

Still, it was a good lesson in the value of experiencing things for yourself first and then using a walkthrough to see what you've missed!

As far as the original games go, Fallout was the better game (it was genre defining after all) but Fallout 2 had the better story... and also more problems. Basically, Interplay didn't expect Fallout to be the hit it was so they rushed out a sequel that was essentially a giant mod since they used the same engine. They added some new features and mechanics but their deadlines were so crushing (one year) that the game launched with so many game breaking bugs that it was impossible to finish it! If you do play it, you need to install the Fallout 2 patches and content packs (there are a couple sites that have them) that fix the game and add in some side quests that had to be dropped due to deadlines.

TL;DR: Fallout is a complete experience that's aged really well with genre defining mechanics and a cool story. Fallout 2 is Fallout with bigger everything. Bigger story, bigger bad guys, bigger quests and bigger bugs ^_^

fallout 3 was my first. and good LORD. my 9 year old mind was blown all over the room xD it's been my favorite eversince, mainly for the memories alone! i remember pulling all nighters on fallout 3, then skipping school the next day to stay in and play it some more! ;) when new vegas came out, i was disappointed that it was a standalone game rather than a DLC. it was essentially the same thing built off the same engine. just a little more content. but it was still REALLY good, and it holds a lot of really nice 12 - 13 year old memories, too :P
then i began playing the very first fallout game on my old laptop, before i spilled water all over it. i didnt get too far, it was way too confusing for me. but i tried my damnest at it, and still thought it was a REALLY great game, especially for it's time.
fallout 4 wasnt a complete dissapointment to me. i mean yeah, it was overhyped and i expected SO much more from it than what i got. and it essentially just follows the same story line as fallout 3 - just flipped the other way around - ... but, it had good gameplay. it was a fun game, theres no denying that. and now mods are out on the xbox one, which is what i play on. and they are INCREDIBLE. so addicted to them. and not just crazy mods either, most of mine are just to improve the vanilla game. even got a realistic mode, that actually feels realistic. it reminds me a lot of playing the long dark, it has the same general feel. except that im surviving in a nuked wasteland instead of northern canada xD

uuuuugh man, i wish i could afford fallout merch though. i'd have my entire room decked out in bottlecaps, nuka cola, pip boys, and vault tec posters. i've been so in love with fallout since i was introduced to it :D

You wouldn't believe how much the German post-apocalyptic LARP-scene is influenced by the Fallout games. I mean, hey, the rulebook-illustrations have cheap ripoffs of the Pip-Boy :D

Before Interplay folded there was a Fallout game in the early planning stages set in Europe/the Middle East. It wasn't an RPG but followed the remnants of a British armoured unit as they tried to return home from the resource wars. That and Fallout: Toronto or Fallout: Berlin would all be really neat to see! There's already a Fallout: Moscow though: Metro 2033 :silly:

I've finished F3, played huge chunks of NV and F4. I dabbled a bit in F1 and 2 years after original release with the GOG versions. For such an epic series, the continuity is pretty bizarre I have to say, compared to its sister series, Elder Scrolls. No expert here though.

I absolutely love the Cold War, apocalyptic aesthetic though. And Fallout mostly nails that bunker mentality, while also working in some Mad Max-style paranoia.

Still need to work towards the end of No. 4. :matches:

Fallout 3 was a masterpiece of a game, Fallout New Vegas however was far from it, after delivering such an epic experience as F3, it would be very hard to make another game that's just as good.
But instead of going for the same vision they threw everything that made F3 good right out of the window, no surprise there though as FNV was made by a different team/studio (which will never ever make another Fallout game).
Fallout NV did a whole lot of things wrong and nearly nothing right (at the start, dlc fixed or made a lot of issues less issue-ish, if that even makes sense)
To name a couple of their biggest mistakes.
-Third person camera distance shortended by 500% compared to F3.
-Too many different ammo types
-Gambling was useless
-Indoor outdoor locations (such as the strip) we're immersion breaking to the maximum as you knew you were actually indoor in a facade because when npc's talked (footsteps/ interactions, gun firing, etc...) you could hear an echo, as if they were standing in an empty room, i don't think this was an oversight with the developers, the strip in FNV was actually a simulation, but i guess im the only one seeing it. No really, i can't believe developers can be that stupid, so i'm making up something that's even more stupid.
-Ending was an epic success, untill you reached the actual ending, which was in my opinion just as bad as the ending in F3, and why is that? Because the new developers didn't learn from Bethesda their mistakes, such as not giving the player the option to continue playing after finishing the game, F3 fixed this with a DLC, FNV didn't because they weren't smart enough to do so.
-The Mojave Wasteland, infact it's not the location that ruins it, it's the locations within the location that ruins it. Lots of real life locations? But they kinda blew together from the bombs right? The strip is 2 min walk away from the NAFB? I don't think so...
So world map shrinked by about 200% compared to F3, are we moving forwards or backwards? And no quantity isn't everything, i'd take quality over it anyday,
Yet, every location had very tiny interiors, so while in F3, Oblivion, and whatnot (shouldn't compare as they're made by a different team as i said before, but one can learn from someone else, they obviously didn't) had more going on underground than above ground, FNV had nothing going on period.
-Invisible walls... i mean REALLY OBISIDIAN? REALLY??? Not only did the layout make ZERO sense, they had to include invisible walls so you could not hike over a mountain to get into that forgotten village in the west mountains.
Oh and the Nightkin community crater was a joke, it was... right? Wasn't even funny, it was stupid, not funny stupid, just stupid, not to include it, but to include it in the way they did. Ha ha ha... NO!
Can't deny the game was also great though in some aspects, clocked in over more than 500 hours in that game (over 2k in F3, over 2.5k hours already on F4...lal)
The expansions made FNV better, not great but better.
Actually i must say the expansions were one of the best ones i've ever played, out of all the games i ever played.
Old world blues was magnificent, i also just boot up the game every once in a while just to play through the Sierra Madre again, that quest, damn left a strong impression on me.
Gun runners arsenal brought in a tonload of new weapons, very much appreciated as one can never have too many guns!
But all in all, FNV was a huge dissapointment for me, yet i did have a lot of fun with it.
The thing that bugged me the most though, the most out of all without exaggerating was the freaking bumhole third person camera.
And man, do i miss some of the songs that radio NV had, why do you think those songs aren't on F4 but the ones from F3 are? Different developers, no rights.Seems like noone is aware of this that Bethesda did not make FNV, they only  published it.
Kinda already knew from the freaking start Obisidian was going to ruin it.
Also there's a rumor (could very well be true) that Bethesda thinks a bit as i do cause they "gave away" FNV to Obisidian.
I wouldn't be proud of such a misfit! Bah, get it off me before i fall partly in love because i like anything strange but nothing weird.

Why am i so "angry"? Because (i love this franchise) they had all the tools in their belt to make this just as good as F3, they even had a perfect example, they were allowed to use (nearly) every and all assets (i think bobbleheads we're out of the question XD) but they chose a different route, the Mojave Wasteland would have been my favourite wasteland up to date, they had the perfect setting, i can't help but think to myself (atleast once every week if not more since  its day of release) how would  it have been if Bethesda would have developed it, but also in the Mojave Wasteland.
Forever stuck with that thought in my mind :P

Yeah let's not get started on that, otherwise i'd have to write another long text telling everyone how good i think F4 really is.
It's also a masterpeice they created a new kind of formula, probably their greatest achievement, yet noone talks about it, not a single reviewer nor magazine talks about their (seemingly) mysterious formula they created.
If you haven't played for over 200 hours i don't think you'll notice but the game will keep evolving around you even if you talk to noboy and start zero quests.
Like i said i have played over 2.5k hours on F4 and there's still monsters i haven't seen, monsters i've only seen once, and they aren't rare, they "happen" when certain conditions are met, once those are met they'll change again because you'll change again, hard to explain, ya gotta play for a while to figure it out.
Basically, Bethesda could not release any DLC and a lv 100 character could still discover new things, new armor and such, even a lv 200, even a lv 300, i don't know where it stops but it's going to "stop" eventually and by stop i mean nothing new will happen.
People don't realise that for every piece of armor there are 3 marks, mark I, II an III but the game won't tell you that.
Your leather chest peices might look the same but when inspected closely you'll see that one piece gives more armor than the other one, yet they have the same mods, it's because they're different ranks.
There's leather, metal, combat and synth all have 3 different rankings
Took me 'bout 1000 hours to find my first legendary mark 3 synth armor arm piece (save corrupted again after that -.-, jep now 1k hours later still no mark 3, gotta boost level)
The higher level you'll become the more chance you have of encountering enemies that will wear better rankings of armor, but they're also more difficult to kill.

Did you ever come across a shemale robot? I did once in over 2500 hours of playing. (not a unique npc) Just a male assaultran to be more precise, a male with metal boobies!
No matter how long you play you will never have seen it all, that's how good their formula is.

See what happens when you don't even get me started... No, i didn't even start yet.

Edit: Don't think you think you already knew that, because even at level 200 Synth mark 2 is rare as hell, Combat mark 3 is about the most average thing you'll find at lv 200, if you want to realise something like that, you will have to have received a rare drop like that in the first place.
Because be honest, who ever looked back at leather when for instance already wearing combat armor and being lv 70+? Probably nobody, well at lv 70+ go back to concord a couple of times, chances are there's atleast 1 raider with mark 3 leather armor in there, which is stronger than mark 1 combat.

Edit 2: to my knowing since after FNV all future Fallout games are to be made by Bethesda, the judge for once gave the rights to the team that deserves it the most, i think for all the weird stuff that has been going on with Fallout, an it dichting it's root's, it hopped developers about 6 times, lots of cancelled titles due to copyright claims, but it's all going to even out now.
Some time back it wasn't even clear who actually owned Fallout.

Well, to each their own @Hatchet. Most of what you didn't like though I consider features :)

But do give Obsidian credit though: they do have experience making Fallout games. Obsidian is the successor to Black Isle, the developers of Fallout 2. They even have team members who worked on Fallout 1. Bethesda set out to make their own mark on the Fallout franchise and I respect that. However, I still prefer the original stories and continuity and New Vegas delivered that. I also agree 100% percent that Lonesome Road was a terrible DLC. It detracted from the game without really adding anything.

Indeed to each their own... Call me nitpicky Im sorry but FO4 is NOT an RPG... Point made and done

On a side note of afore mentioned "formula" thats allegedly so spot on... Why was the dialogue so torn to shreds this go round??... The voiced dialogue was THE WORST thing they couldve changed.. And they did it!!! Its so watered down its not even funny, its disgusting... Call me crazy but id rather imagine my characters voice and have more options than yes, no, sarcastic, and ask a question. I mean cmon!!! Saying FO4 is a good game in its own rights, is one thing.. Saying its a masterpiece implies it has no room for improvement and let me be the first to tell you its got MORE than enough room for it. FO4 is a farcry from what it shouldve been.. There done, no more to say in fear of a serious rant!!

Good Monday morning!

It was one of those weekends where I didn't go online :)

I'm a BIG fan of the original FO but I found 2 to be quite boring. The gameplay was better but the atmosphere was somehow very "meh."

It's basically the same feeling I have for NV. If FNV has been done on the East Coast (and minus Caesar's Legion) I may have liked it. Again, though the gameplay *elements* of NV were better, that was it. The atmosphere in 3 was so much more interesting that I found myself constantly bored in the Mojave Wasteland. And that's why I don't reinstall FNV but still have modded FO3 installed

Also, I'm unsure if this is common knowledge but the FNV team looked at the most popular FO3 mods and incorporated those into the game during development. So... FNV is really more of an optimized "supermod" of FO3 that was well marketed...and gained its own very distinct fan base :winky:

i do recognize the shortcomings of 3 as well of course...like the "forgiving" townspeople, etc. But again, I just found the gritty, dark, "musty" feel of the Capital Wasteland to be an awing adventure and a dark delight. You had all the horror of the unforgiving wasteland but contrasted with little sparks of survival "civilization" in places like Megaton, and the black humor of laces like the Republic of Dave.

Yes, FO3 had its limitations, but the experience of that atmosphere and the amount of options we're given to resolve situations ...amazing. And fun:big_smile:

And let's not talk about FO4. That game almost made me want to set Bethesda's offices on fire:matches::matches::matches::insanity_fluffy:

@Tbone555 Fallout 3 was also my first Fallout. After I'd played it a lot I played the first Fallout, then FO2. Loved the first one, didn't like the 2nd at all. Then New Vegas came out. It was okay but I was mostly bored.

i went back to playing FO3 with all the mods that Obsidian got ideas from to put into FNV and played that and nothing else until FO4came out.

I was such a Fallout/Bethesda fan that I bought every bobble head sold, a Vault 101 parka hoodie, a Brotherhood of Steel hoodie, and three different BoS T-shirts. And more junk too.

But then 4 came out, it wasn't the RPG I was looking for, and so I googled "PC survival games" and found my new favorite: The Long Dark ^_^

From debut of FO4 until I completed the main storyline quest took 74 hours. After that I pretty much gave up on it until re-vamped Survival Mode came out, and then gave that a go for a few weeks and once again it is gathering dust

It was too little, too late.

F3 seemed to nail that Cold War, post apocalyptic aesthetic perfectly, and it even felt like more of a sequel than Fallout 2.

@Hatchet here's how I rank the ones I have played.

Fallout, a Post-apocalyptic Role-Playing Game: Truly Great.

Fallout 2: Fair

Fallout 3: Great

Fallout New Vegas: Fair

Fallout 4: Shit (a single-player "Fallout mod" for Borderlands with Real-time Settler mod, Powered Power Armor mod, and More Gun Mods included).

@cekivi Lonesome Road was bad, but I literally *hate* the Old World Blues DLC.

Feel the same about Mothership Zeta for 3 because they added nothing constructive to the story of a Vault Dweller or Courier trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

It's unfortunate that Interplay was forced to rush FO2, and is possibly the reason I can't stand the story it's trying to tell. If given more time, a better story could have been written that included less nonsense like talking deathclaws.
