  1. Here's what I've been wondering about for a while now... In episode 3 when you enter the Community Hall you see a lot of crash survivors, father Thomas, and... That's it! Where are all the locals? Is Thomas the only one who survived the First flare? The first time you talk to him, he says "We gathered people here when the weather started turning bad three... Or was it four days ago? The houses became too cold and it seemed better to bring everyone under one roof. Then yesterday, the crash survivors started showing up." So... Where is everyone? Did they all die in 2-3 days? That makes NO sence! And I kinda get it. There should be a reason why Astrid is the one who has to go look for survivors. But there could still be a few locals too old/sick/injured to do this job. It would be very interesting to see, for example, an old lady knitting in the kitchen, or two covered in bandages guys playing cards in a corner of the stage, or a mother with a little baby. Something like that.
  2. This topic has come up in other threads too, but I wanted it not to get lost, so started its own thread. I do see the point of having to finish the harvesting task and animation to open and dress a carcass initially, in order to get closer to the meat. Yet, if I'm setting out for a larger harvesting task (e.g. a whole moose for 3-4 hours), when blizzard hits after the second hour and I cancel the remaining task to run to shelter, I believe some of my work should have yielded resources (both from a reality and gameplay perspective) - and I should not be having to start over. [btw, I'm really enjoying that I can experience the environment, e.g., getting dark, snowfall, during the animation!] There is an obvious-looking workaround to set out multiple, smaller chunks of harvesting, so that less is lost if cancelled. With the length/shaky camera movement/"too explicit" nature of the animations this seems less of a fun way to experience TLD I think... [Yeah, I'm a wuss, not denying, while very much welcoming the immersion, this change also immediately altered my behaviour to try harvesting in as few steps as possible, and/or do it in a dark cave with smaller game/looking away during] I'm not yet 100% decided what option I would suggest as best (therefore the thread to learn others' perspectives), but I believe the current situation could be finetuned. On microharvesting - which is somewhat related: I agree with the intention (if there was one?) to somehow limit the possibility of cooking 100 g chunks to level up cooking quickly. (although I found that tedious myself, and rarely resorted to it). In general I would love the option to split / cut / (+merge if same condition?) continuous types of resources into smaller (larger) entities. (e.g. to carry some flour and oil with me). Even if there is a minimum size for a piece of meat to yield cooking experience (0,5 kg? 0,25kg?) / partial experience based on size (?) Thanks in advance, if you choose to contribute your thoughts!
  3. A lot of us don't care for the idea of a trader, especially if it's an actual NPC becuase it would ruin the loneliness of the game a little, but others want the trader desperately. What's your opinion? Feel free to write more specific answers as a reply, or suggestions for another question. (I already know that @ManicManiac doesn't want it 😁)
  4. Greetings, everyone! The recent game awards got me thinking how excited other gamers get about them and how I can never relate because, even though there's a lot of truly great games out there, I don't have a very diverse library. I have my tiny little pile of games I hold dear and play over and over again. I rarely get into something new and it's usually rather small games. So I present to you my own categories so we can find out which places our beloved Long Dark would fall on and what other games the TLD fans enjoy Proposed categories: 1. Most played games (h) 2. Best lore, plot 3. Games I wish to forget just so I can play them again 4. My go-to games to unwind 5. Most esthetically pleasing games, best atmosphere 6. I crapped my pants playing these 7. Best storytelling Okay, I think that's enough. I hope you find it interesting! Can't wait to see what all of you have to say
  5. The Real Life Interloper Run This is a somewhat dramatized and TLD-ified account of my day-to-day life. Enjoy . Day 5500?: It’s cold today. Cold in this freezing world, but it’s only going to get colder. I shower and get ready for school. I don’t eat breakfast because I still have some calories left from last night’s supper. Schoolwork until 11 AM. I find a half-dozen cans laying around the recess area. They are banged up but are still months or years away from expiration. I take four and leave the rest for any other survivors. The kids running around and shrieking… they are not survivors. (That came out wrong, didn’t it?) Back to doing schoolwork, chemistry is by far the most interesting and challenging class. I like to sit in the corner where I can keep an eye on things. I don’t trust any of them. Back home from the day’s looting, I craft a tinder plug, reheat week-old stew, and pass time running around in circles and reading until bedtime. It’s too cold to do anything more outside. Day 5502: It dropped below freezing last night. I nearly got frostbite on my toes. Consequences of being so tall that I don’t fit in the bed. I huddle beside the heater until it’s time to head to school. It’s freezing outside, colder than I evercan remember it being this time of year. Wearing a single sweater and a single pair of pants isn’t helping any. Still, the sky is clear and the sun is shining. Mag lens weather, if only I had a mag lens. Stupid Interloper loot. The cans are still in the recess area, but they have decayed to the point where eating them is just inviting food poisoning. I still don’t know what they are, I need to find a can opener to max the calories.
  6. Fair warning, this entire post is going to be full of speculation and spoilers. These are my theories entirely and gathered from context clues, actual dialogue and pure speculation. Until the story of Wintermute and the complete DLC tale is released, I have zero proof of anything. Certain spelling might be off as I'm unsure of the correct ways and I'm kinda scared to lose this all looking for the correct spelling. If you've played Wintermute or survival the names should be clear as whom I'm referring to. You've been warned, this is deep and spoilers run wild. I know this is very long. I welcome any information to prove me wrong or lead me in the right direction. If you've read this far, what are your thoughts?

    Travois

Crafted a travois. It cost 3% condition off my hunting knife. It took 3 hours. It has a capacity of 75 kg. This is in addition to your pack but the extra burden does slow you down and maybe cost more fatigue. When deployed it will deploy directly behind you with the handles on the left and right. When equipped you can move forward or backwards but cannot turn in place nor strafe. You can turn slowly as you move forward or backwards. Might keep that in mind if loading the travois in a location with limited room to maneuver within. You cannot run with the travois. The command to release the travois defaults to "H" which appears briefly when you grab it then disappears. I had a few moments trying to put down the travois so I could load it. I got the "H" to show up I think by going into inventory or something. There is currently (I haven't experimented) no other way to drop the travois. You cannot interact with anything, i.e. pick up a stick, unless you put the travois down. The travois takes condition damage as it is used. Whether the weight carried affects that I do not know. I do know that in a walk with 35 kg of meat and 75 sticks from the Camp Office to Trapper's it lost about 9 or 10% of its condition. I forgot to see what it takes to repair it. I did look at harvesting it and you get back three maple saplings. In this case I was following mostly the path I normally would except I went down slope into the bowl below Trapper's as I didn't think it would cross the rocks and steep transverse slope. I play Pilgrim. For me, it seemed to have some decent value for moving stuff from place to place. At 1 kg it was not really weighty.
  8. This was my most wanted item (Aside from a sled) But omg, am I having problems with these. Between the game telling me I can't go up steep inclines, (half ways down a hill and LOCKING ME IN PLACE.) To saying there's "No room for Travois" Despite it being wide open. The darn things keep clipping through the map, and I had to save scum, after I set down the poles to unpack and port my items down the slight incline only for THE WHOLE DARN TRAVOIS AND ALL MY WORLDLY POSSESSIONS to no clip out of existence; 165 days worth of carefully stockpiled goods GONE because the collision on these mofo's aren't optimized to recognize THE GROUND as a SOLID OBJECT... Adding an option in the menu to recall the travois in case of it falling out of the map and have it spawn nearby would be wonderful. The no room for travois thing... yeah okay in doors obviously but if Mac fits through so should it, its not super wide. The incline thing, at least when traveling down hill shouldn't be an issue. up hill fine, but getting stuck less than ten feet from the bottom of a hill in Winding River and then having to spin like a top in place to make it so the travois didn't no clip through the hill so I could put it down safely this time and unpack was completely unnecessary, I would have preferred it to knock me over, and both of us go rolling to the bottom of the hill and some of my stuff spill out and need to be repacked, (Maybe even gimme some sprains and bruises from the whole thing) Then being locked in place unable to move back or forward. If a wolf would have been on me I'd have been toast. Still I understand Its a WIP, and I'm sorry if this was overly fussy. Still would like to see some patchwork done to them to keep this from happening again.
  9. I really wanted to like them. I still think the concept is interesting and a good idea to make the game more engaging. However, they move the camera a lot and are very jerky - the camera bounces up and down with the sawing motion of the tool, etc. I am very susceptible to motion sickness in games so this makes me nauseous. Even if the animations didn't cause this problem I don't want to watch it so many times per animal. Imagine harvesting a moose in 1 kg chunks you'll have to see the animation about 35 times.
  10. Now that the devs have implemented harvesting animations, what other animations can be added to heighten immersion? Would eating and drinking animations be a good adition or just useless work? This question can be applied for many actions in the game that could become an animation instead of a spinning wheel. Here are a couple exemples or actions in the game: Starting a fire, repairing clothes, eating, drinking, harvesting materials, etc. I would like to hear what you guys think! I also what to know if its worth the devs efforts.
  11. On Ps4, just got DLC and updated to 2.25, and I go to skin a rabbit, wanting to leave the hides curing while I continue hunting, figuring I'll gut and fillet it later. And the whole rabbit disappeared. The hide is in my inventory, but the rest of the carcass is just gone. all the meat and guts vanished, because I skun it first. So I tried to take meat and then leave the unskun or gutted rabbit, and it vanished too. I've lost three rabbits, because I tried to just take one thing at a time. Just happened with a ptarmigan too. gonna try quitting to my last save and see if its still a thing. UPDATE Shut off the game entirely, restarted and updated ps4, went back in and loaded my old save, went out and hunted three rabbits again Skun the first rabbit, got the hide and the carcass appeared in my inventory. Skun the second, got a 2nd hide, but no carcass. Skun the 3rd, hide, no carcass. Dropped the first carcass out of my inventory: IT DISAPEARED TOO I dunno what to do, gonna try to start a new game and see if the bug is still happening.
  12. You have been solving this problem for 2 years. During this time, you can make a new game, and even more so fix the error, but there are only excuses on the forums. Remove the game from Epic Games if you can't solve this problem. Some people buy the game on this platform, you can write that now there are errors at launch
  13. Okay, we know from the Nov dev diary, ZC will be where Langston Mine is. This sign points towards Immutable Hesitation which is currently blocked by rubble. What do you think HL will do to give us access to this new area? They could either clear the roadway or the railroad track. My guess would be the RR track - the collapse doesn't seem as bad as the road.
  14. Where do you think the transition will be? I'm guessing Conductor's Dropoff. It's a named location and looks out onto an open location. There is one other "overlook" but it's not named and looks more blocked off: Then there is the rope-climb (with no rope, I've added it for illustrative purposes). Makes sense this would go up the Mountain Pass region. Still begs the question, how do you get to the top to attach the rope? I'm guessing HL will add the rope when they add the region.
  15. I know this would be better as a poll but I’m not smart enough to figure out how to start one. generally there’s 4 ways I’ve seen people hunt bears if you don’t do any of these do tell how you go about hunting them 1.shoot it once then hide in a car and wait for it to bleed out 2.climb on a really tall rock/fallen tree and shoot it a bunch 3.run circles around it like a absolute madman and shoot when you can 4.get surprised by it shoot it once then get mauled and find its body an hour later (me)
  16. Obtained Obtained by being bitten by a poisoned wolf in the ZC. 100% chance when bitten? I'm guessing not, sort of like torn clothes. Perhaps higher clothing protection rating will reduce the chance of poisoning? Although not specifically mentioned, could we also become poisoned by eating Poisoned Wolf Meat? Effects of Poisoning I'm guessing effects will be similar to Food Poisoning (Condition loss over time, perhaps without the fatigue) but the player CAN die from this. Cures Once poisoned, likely cures will be antibiotics and reishi tea. Perhaps some recovery time needed as well? Thoughts?
  17. You know you’ve been playing too much TLD when you start hearing in-game sounds in real life… For instance, my cat sounds exactly like a stove door closing after a fire is lit when he meows . And feel free to share any of your own experiences of this sort .
  18. So on the opposite side of the Ravine transfer zone there’s an closed off path on the opposite side right next to an trailer, it looks like it goes above the cave to PV but then it seems to up the mountains, maybe to upper great bear?

"It's not more than lights in the sky. Yet, it is." Speculations?
  20. Ok, that does it... I'm suspecting for a while, that the way how wolves respawn have changed in one of these latest updates. For years I've had the experience, that once you clear up an area, you get some peace at least until the carcasses despawn, (about 4-5 days). I could even help it by not (fully) harvesting the carcasses, so they stay on the ground longer. I have the feel that it is no longer the case, they are coming back almost instantly, while their "previous reincarnations" are still lying around. I've noticed it first in FA, with the kennel of 4 under the island house still taking their well deserved rest, some new and very vivid guys shown up between them... There were also other suspicious situations. Most recently, as I'm entering the Pier in BI: - there were 4 Timberwolves patrolling the yard. I sneaked up on them with a bow: 3 laying on the ground, one got away. - took some of the meat, slept an hour or two in the chamber behind the rope, then climbed up with the goodies and starting the circle: there are again 4 T-wolves aggroing from below. (I actually had to drop the meat before jumping on the boat, so there was nothing smelly on me). I took down 3 with the rifle, one got away again. I am about halfway doing the circle: there are again 2 whining around. By the time I've reached the end of the peer: 3. Has anyone else noticed that respawn logic may have changed? or is it just my perception? is this intentional? Thanks for your insight!
  21. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scurvy Some of my thoughts/questions: What foods provide the necessary vitamin C? I'm guessing: Any canned fruits Rosehips Potatoes, Carrots Sardines Energy Drink Other? The cure appears to be just consuming vitamin C. I'm guessing we will need to eat/drink something with VC then wait or rest a number of hours - similar to other afflictions What will be the in-game effects of the affliction? I'm guessing progressive health loss as well as reduced health recovery Fatigue Any other thoughts?
  22. My theory is ethier: 'snow blindness', injury, or its from extreme cold So: with snow blindness its the most unlikely out of the 3 options listed above, as you would probably notice mathis being in discomfort from the condition, which we don't see. Plus, wouldn't other characters had gotten it too? Characters like mackenzie have probably been outside for longer then mathis, and other convicts in the bus crash would've probably gotten it too if mathis got it. Someone in the TLD subreddit discord said they think mathis may have a cauliflower ear on the same side as his red eye, which may indicate it was a result of injury. But that would also probably cause some type of discomfort I'd assume, which again we don't see mathis having any medical trouble from his eye. But who knows, maybe he's just suffering in the background while mackenzie is out doing missions and just tries to seem tough in front of mackenzie lol And with cold google says: Blisteringly cold temperatures can cause the blood vessels in our eyes to constrict or freeze our cornea. This process, as we are sure you have guessed, is very painful and can compromise visual clarity. When this process occurs, double vision, blurred vision, and/or loss of vision are likely. Eyes can heal pretty fast from injury and cold [usually about a week if i remember correctly, correct me if I'm wrong! With the cold it depends on how severe it was I'd assume] so that could make the fact that his eye is still pretty red near the end of ep4 lead a bit more towards snow blindness, although i wouldn't say its actually that likely, at the very least its been about a week passed during ep4, and maybe about 1-2 more weeks if he got his red eye at the bus crash or shortly after, and a bit less if he got it during the travel from mountain town to blackrock. Personally i think its because of an injury. But it could also be a side effect of being a villain lol, do you guys have any theories about why his eyes sclera is red? [NOTE: please don't take what i say about these medical conditions as absolute fact, i am not a medical professional. I'm just some rando on the internet talking about characters in the quiet apocalypse.]
  23. Venture guess at what the reward will be? I'd love to get a pickaxe to be able to mine coal with!
  24. Things that are still messed up but you played so much, you don't even consider it anymore I'll start Snoozing next to a corps.
