You were brought into the land of the long dark.

Sorry if this would belong somewhere else if so please move it. As the title says this is one of those what if questions and i would really love to hear what people would do. You were brought into the land of long dark. Of course you will choose if you are male or female and such. But you will be in the world of long dark and must abide by the rules there. That does not mean you can not get a car to work or there is no chance of taming a wolf or that you couldnt raise a rabbit farm. You can do all that you can do anything you can do now but under rules of the world. The people from the story mode would also be around so you could talk with grey mother torture a certain person at a certain farm choose to be a nomad or choose to rebuild.

So what i am asking. If you were stuck in the world of long dark with infinite respawning of yourself what would you do? Of course just because you can respawn dont think that you can do whatever you want whenever you want. The only added rule ill put in is simple. You will remember everything every ounce of pain all memerioes are vivid to the point of torture.  You can not  kill the grey mother or will or astrid they will be in the case of SAO be immortal objects to us. Also stuff like ammo/animals respawn but to an extent so it will remain survival so no being able to have 1000s of rounds for the rifle or enough arrows to kill every animal. You will be able to create things within reason so no nuclear power stuff but you will be able to create explosives create eletronics etc. So no sci fiction stuff allow so no ufos but normal stuff in our world you could most likely do.

For me I will prob choose to be female since ive always done so in video games so i would do it here as well. I would choose to start off in milton and find a way to get a truck or car working. Since based on what hinterland provided it seems a near emp type event disabled all power but didnt destroy it hence near emp event. Seems to have overloaded systems i would cover all of milton looking for parts that are usable to fix up a car/truck. Prob a truck assuming that some trucks are disel it would be simple to switch one over to bio diesel so the use of animal fat would prob work as fuel. I would travel the lands looking for those alone and alive and hopes of bringing them together. as well as find a way to breed rabbits for food and find other ways to farm food. I would try and tame a few wolves for a sled team incase of the pass between milton and other areas you cant really use a car until managing to clear the tunnel. I would also try to fix up some of the houses after getting those alive together.

Now my question to all of you. what would you do? would you hold up in a cave and suffer? would you help those alive?

Okay... Odd Question, but here goes...

Assuming that the NPCs exist, but the whole map is available, We start off at the crashed plane. Haul ass down, bump into grey mother and put two and two together, figuring out that she's boned if she stays there.

So I'll loot the town for supplies, get that flare gun, determine the place is screwed and I have to keep moving, but if I leave the old lady behind, she's dead. I make it clear, she stays, she's dead. She might want to stay, then I say, "Well, then let me put a bullet in your head, because it's better then you slowly freezing/starving to death.

There would be some arguments, I suspect I'd be able to convince her to die getting out, because hey, humanity is on the skids. Need all hands on deck.

As for that Convict, I take the knife out as promised, then stab him in the throat. Simply can't trust the idiot.

Hauling all my loot up to the park office, I'd wait for good weather, bundle up grey mother and drag her ass to the park. Might have to flare some wolves on the way.

I lower her down with the rope. It breaks. Fortunately, there's that nice crazy guy Methuselah down there. I get his attention with a flare and tel him to take care of the lady. Then I throw all the loot down.

There is a way to mountain goat down without the rope, so I do that.

I then tell Methuselah to stop with his cryptic shit and help haul crap.

We make it up the rope, through the cave, then We bump into Jerry and his bear.

I assume Methuselah runs off, because he's all cryptic and shit. Hopefully leaving the gear I asked him to haul. I drag everyone to the Trapper's Cabin.

Grey mother takes care of Jerry. I point out he's got pine cones in his beard, then I go off to get meds, even though I'm more then likely carrying about 50 Reishi tea and a small case of antibiotics.

Bear shows up. Drama. Loot the Dam. Get everything back to Trappers. Yada Yada Yada, Kill me a bear.

Tell Jerry and Grey Mother to stay there. I get the Rabbit Snares set up, Leave them a few billion calories and an ocean of water, head off to The Dam, because I need to get help.

I DON'T get jumped by that moron in the dam, because I'm smarter than the average bear and I have a gun. I knew something was up on the first play through without knowing the story, and my flare I fired into the room should have at least startled the guy. Once I have a location, I order him to surrender. When he starts acting all cagey, I shoot him. Don't have time for sociopaths in the new world. You are on Team Eldritch, or you're Wolf Bait.

I think we have a computer hacker and some shit in the PV map. So I assume eventually I hook up with her and Astrid. Much Drama ensues. We figure out how to get to Astrid's town with her medication she needs to save the town, and I tell her to haul ass there, but I need to go back to the old guy and the blind woman.

Maybe I get to radio them and figure out what's going on, whatever.

We make it to Perseverance, BS takes place. I take over the town because I get shit done and I don't trust anyone else to turn a bunch of emotionally scarred whiners into a badass community of survivors.

Eventually get everyone together. Send a scout to that stupid prison because that place makes me worried as hell. Hope everyone is dead, if not, time to go conquer them. If they don't get on Team Eldritch, there's gonna be some natural selection.

More then likely move everyone into the prison because, hey, it's a prison. Those places are good at keeping out bad things, like WOLVES THAT GLOW IN THE DARK.

Set up teams to make sweeps of the island. Get a community of fishers down at the sea. Drag as many fishing huts to the nearest fishing area near my Fortress as possible. Eventually the deer, wolves, bunnies, moose and bears are gonna run out, but the sea bass should last forever. Even more so, because no more humans overfishing them.

Set up a series of outposts. Get my science on and figure if there is a way to channel the electrical power into batteries to store later from an aurora. Work on Faraday cages. Get some diesel engines going.

No, we do NOT cull the weak. We cull the stupid and anyone who can't get with my program. I can make use of ANYONE, including a blind old woman.

After that, it's the slow climb back to civilization as I carve order out of chaos. Collecting books are priority one, the establishment of the new world order according to Eldritch where I forge an empire that will stand for a 1,000 years in dedication to me.

Because, you know, it's good to have long term goals.

Damn Move over terminator. The new overlord has arrived.

Just trying to be honest. I made a career out of dealing with Crisis. People having break downs, talking people out of suicide, finding solutions to impossible problems. After a while I stopped with the false humility and just accepted that I am the guy you want around when the universe falls apart. I'm getting old, so I'm no longer the miracle worker I was when I was young and had a healthy spine, but I have no doubt that in the advent the universe put me in such a scenario, I'd feel no remorse about looking past the fluff and the BS and look at the "reality" of the situation.

The reality is, whom ever is in charge is going to have to be creative, adaptive, able to put aside his own issues and put the needs of the group first, notice interpersonal conflict before it gets out of control and resolve it, and finally, be prepared to make some truly ghastly choices between, oh, for example, do you gently make love to a bear with a chainsaw penis, or give oral sex to a school of piranha?

Something like that.

Life isn't fair, and in the Silent apocalypse, doubly so.  Not that it's a bad thing, mind you.

I would go so far to say that life is very unfair in most people's favor, and that most people don't have a clue as to how lucky they are. Life in America, at least, is down right SWEET. Even if you have NOTHING, and I work with people who have nothing, not even their sanity left, It is possible to get back on your feet, find medical attention, and turn your life around, if you just keep putting one foot in front of the other and move towards your goal.

Of course, it helps to have a miracle worker like me in your corner.

Maybe In comparison to everyone else around you, you're doing shitty. But in comparison to an objective state (I have food, clothing, shelter, safety,  medical care, and the opportunity to improve myself.) I assure you, 95% of America is doing awesome. The irony is, the 5%, could be doing awesome, if they had the willpower.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not talking, "Pull yourself up by the bootstraps". No No No, I'm talking about, "Ask for help and stop trying to do everything your way. Your way got you in this mess, time to let other people tell you what to do for your own good."

America has this problem of thinking we're better then we are. And that's not off the top of my head. They did a study where they asked people to estimate their social standing/economic wealth. Over 75% of people surveyed came back VASTLY overestimating themselves. To the order of a full magnitude. People under the poverty line thinking they are lower middle class. Up until you got "Rich"

The Rich consistently UNDER estimated themselves. Constantly thinking they are WORSE off then they think.

Compared to Europe or Japan? Those guys KNOW their situation, dead on. only like 15% were wrong.

Think about it. a country where 75% think they are better then they really are, and 5% thinking they are constantly failing and need to try harder and harder and harder.

No wonder America achieves so much. We're INSANE with no realistic view of how we fit in the universe. And the universe is run by those of the strongest desire to change it.

In the advent of the Silent apocalypse, you are going to have a much stronger group of people on Great Bear, but they are STILL modern day humans. They still depend on a great deal of infrastructure. It'll take time for people to come to grips with the reality that society will no longer have the luxuries we all enjoy. The Luxury of someone else doing our dirty work. Someone to pick up the trash. Someone to kill the food we eat. Someone to take care of criminals. Someone to Hold criminals away from the rest of us.

Western Society has the ultimate Luxury. To Be MORAL. To have the extra resources to do the right thing.

In the Silent apocalypse, that option will be gone, especially since I believe the Aurora Event has changed the weather patterns to the point, I don't know if great Bear will ever have a "summer" again. That means EVERYONE pulls their weight. EVERYONE does SOMETHING. Which can be almost ANYONE. Even a blind old woman can be of help.

The thing is, there won't be room for the many luxuries we enjoy. The most Effective form of government is a dictatorship with a socialist economy. However, it only works if EVERYONE in the community pulls together for the same cause, the group is under the dunbar empathy limit, and the leader is Hyper-competent.

The larger the community, the greater the need for decentralization of power as well as the need for a proper capitalistic economy. The more diversity you get/accept in the group, the less you can depend on "Kindness" and the more you need to move to "Enlightened Selfishness".

So, given what I know about the island, the most likely size of the surviving population on the island, and the psychological make up of said island, I might be an "outsider", but unless the community of Perseverance or the Prison already has someone like me there already organizing the place, I'm going to have to step up.

And if there was, I would go talk with said leader, explain my view points, work out what his views were, and if I agreed with them, I would accept him as my leader and establish myself as the second in command. A much preferred position, in my opinion. As the saying goes, the power was never with the Oracle, but with the priests you had to approach for access to the oracle.

And if he didn't agree with my views, and I thought he was a danger to our long term survival, and he refused to listen to me, then I would become his best friend and betray him when I could find a way to blame his "accidental" death on something or someone else. The death of one to save hundreds. Of course, I'd give him a chance to prove that his way of thinking worked, of course. I mean, I'm not a power hungry monster. If his ideas work, then they work.

I have personally experienced the addictive affects of control. I know what it does to your thinking. I got over it and I no longer feel the dopamine rush of political power. Took a long time to rewrite my implicit reactions, but I'm proud to say I would seek power because I'm the best person for the job, not because I want or even enjoy the job. Taking over would be a duty, not a reward. However, given my track record of dealing with disasters both community wide and personal, I know I'd be the right person to handle the job.

And as soon as I created a self sustaining community, I would seek to replace myself at once. I would then remain in the background as a much needed backup in case something went wrong, and I could mentor my replacement to make sure they don't suffer from dopamine addiction. THAT is where most communities like this screw up. They get established, but the people in charge assume they are too valuable and can never let anyone else do the job.

The price of not having replacements for key members of a community is far worse then any damage putting a "noob" in charge could do. Better to have someone learn when you are around to teach, then to fall ill and die unexpectedly, thus leaving the community with no clear chain of succession. I could make sure my replacement had my philosophy and knowledge and be around in case something went wrong.

Then I'd step down. As soon as I determined the community was stable and had gotten along without me and was thriving, I'd leave to find somewhere else in the world where everything was falling apart so I could rebuild society there as well... and so on... and so on... until the world was once more the servant of mankind and order reigned across the land.

Or I died.

Either or.

I find the best way to stay young at heart is to keep busy.

Well I'd be a female since I am in RL so... but yea after the crash etc. I would gather up all I could and head out to look for shelter.

Upon entering / meeting Grey Mother I would do as she said and get her food and supplies, just to get the hiking boots, rope, etc. Then I would take most of the food back that I gave her once she falls asleep, and also take her rifle (whatever I can easily carry).  I would leave her there all alone since she's clearly a user that's also looney.

Then whenever I make my way to Hobbs, I would clearly jam the knife as far into his guts that I could because he deserves it. (Sorry but I just have no mercy for people like him...) Oh and I would make darn sure to take the knife out of his guts after he dies, I'll be needing that for hunting etc.

Then for Jeremiah I of course would help him since he does seem pretty cool, but he best not lock me out...

Anyway when it comes time to meet the baddie in the dam I'll use the rifle to blow his head off, id then loot him to see if he has anything on him that I could use.

I would also be searching for survivors during all of this, and make sure to keep myself fit for hunting and gathering. Craft a bow and some arrows for when the rifle bullets run out. Use the Knife I ripped out of Hobbs guts to skin what I kill to make clothes, booties, blankets, etc.

Lastly as for Methuselah I would be thinking I was hallucinating due to the cold or something, either way I'd make use of his warm fire and cups of coffee.

Ps. Forgot to mention that dumb Bear, I'd spear the heck out of its chest and face until it dies, and I'd make sure to definitely take their meat and skin.

Assuming I'm flying Mackenzie's plane, I'd probably die on impact.

I never thought of that, makes sense, considering surviving a crash in a plane is probably pretty rare.

Apparently, he is ejected prior to the crash, hence the reason you don't start by the plane.  However, not sure if I'd rather crash with the plane or be ejected...both seem equally deadly!

Well what I would do is find a can of summit soda and drink it right up. I really want to know what that stuff tastes like.

Could it be a Ginger Ale type, or taste like a Mountain Dew? with the name Summit Soda, I would guess Mountain Dew? Either way stuck out in TLD, any kind of Soda Pop would be a much needed treat. ❤️
