Icon on top

Every now and then I notice a shield icon appear in the top middle of the screen. It looks like it has a “p” in it but I can’t make it out. What does this mean.

Welcome to the forum @Coachjohn.
The shield icon will soon be your new in-game bestfriend...it represents that your survivor is in a location that is shielded from the wind.

Whenever the wind is blocked by the terrain or an object, (such as a tree, vehicle, snowbank, building, or cliff), the shield icon will appear at the top-center of the display, but if you move slightly or if the wind direction changes and you / your campfire are again exposed to the wind, then the icon will fade away.

Note: You may be able to tolerate the cold weather for much longer if you make the small effort of walking on the correct side of the path to maximize wind protection while traveling.
