Welcome to the forum @timimt.
It is difficult to help without more information.

  • Was TLD game previously working properly on your PC?
  • Does your PC meet the minimum game requirements?
  • Are the video drivers updated?
  • Is your version of 'DirectX' updated?
  • Which OS are you using?

We would all be happy to help. Please provide us a bit more detail.

  • MINIMUM:
    • OS: Windows XP
    • Processor: Dual-Core Intel i5 CPU @ 2GHz+
    • Memory: 4 GB RAM
    • Graphics: Intel 4xxx Series w/ 512MB VRAM or better
    • Storage: 7 GB available space
    • Sound Card: Any on-board chip will work.

The 'Steam Version' of 'The Long Dark' is very stable, please do not worry my friend. :coffee:

Sure, it is all right here:

Please also see:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/179113/how-to-install-the-latest-version-of-directx

  • DirectX 11.0 is included in Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2. There is no stand-alone update package for this version. You can update DirectX by installing the service pack and update listed below.
  • DirectX 11.1 is available for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 RS SP1, with Platform Update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 (KB2670838).

Note To upgrade DirectX further, you will need to upgrade your operating system.

Let us know if you need any additional guidance. :coffee:

Thanks for sharing those troubleshooting steps, @s7mar7in!

@timimt, if you have tried those steps but are still seeing frequent crashing please share your Session Log file with us before starting up the game again. This file should give us an idea of what kind of errors the game is encountering and help us find a solution.  Information on how to locate your Session Log is posted here

It's time to grab a copy of this file for the Hinterland Team.

Log Location in Windows

  • In Windows, open File Explorer
  • At the top of the window, switch to the View tab
  • Go to the Show/Hide section and check the Hidden Items box
  • On the left side, scroll down to This PC and click on the C drive
  • Navigate to the following folder:
  • C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\LocalLow\Hinterland\TheLongDark
  • (Your Windows username will be the name of the USERNAME folder)

Inside TheLongDark folder you will find a file named output_log.txt . This is your session log. :coffee:

Hi timimt, no need to apologize! Everyone has different levels of technical knowledge and that is fine. :)

So we can better investigate this issue, could you share your Session Log file with us? You should be able to add it as an attachment to your next post.

How to Find your Log in Windows:

  1. In Windows, open File Explorer
  2. At the top of the window, switch to the View tab
  3. Go to the Show/Hide section and check the Hidden Items box
  4. On the left side, scroll down to This PC and click on the C drive
  5. Navigate to the following folder:
    C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\LocalLow\Hinterland\TheLongDark
(Your Windows username will be the name of the USERNAME folder)
  6. Inside TheLongDark folder you will find a file named output_log.txt . This is your session log.
