Have you ever found a hidden cave?

These types of caves are usually overlooked and forgotten about.

Post pictures of cave interiors but do not give away any location spoilers.

This is an open cave most people should recognize.   There are two openings but it does block the wind.  There is always a can of dog food inside.  I had forgotten about this cave for quite some time.

How many people found this cave?

 

Pretty sure that these hidden caves are lairs for cougars.

Interesting. Guaranteed dog food. Is this in HRV? I've never seen it before and I probably never will because to me HRV is a death trap. Not trying to bring up an argument, just my opinion.

The clue was that most people would know about this cave which indicates it is on a map that is from a pre 1.0 release

This hidden cave does have a resource so maybe its location should be documented.  The location will be revealed after a few more days.

So another clue to tide you over.

Perhaps the dog food was for the lone wolf.

 

With the Lone Wolf,  the water puddle and the dog food this cave should really be named The Kennel.

It's not a huge cave.

It's easy to miss, it is very well hidden. 

I don;t have a good shot of the entrance, because of that, but this is what it looks like, looking out. 

Great little cave to fight Cabin Fever in if you are lucky/unlucky enough to find a man-made shelter nearby, and you have good, warm clothing. You cannot build a fire in the cave with you now, I don't think. In the past you could, near the entrance, but you had to be careful where you put it. The new footprint for the campfire does not seem to allow for placement inside, at all, any longer. But it gives wind shielding almost always, even in hellacious blizzards. Nice little shelter cave, if you find it. I will have to play with campfire placement, and see if it is at all possible to set up a safe fire now, just not sure. It would suck to get blocked in here and not be able to get out.  It's tiny.

You're a little more to the right that I was, I think I was almost against the left wall when I took my shot. 
Have you been able to build a campfire in there, since Vigilant Flame? Or haven't you tried yet?

The "tiny cave" (TheladyPancake-> what would you like to name it?) does allow a fire and a bedroll and is within reach of warmth bonus.

The fire does seem to be wind proof.  Unable to build the Snow Shelter.

There is a shortcut above the cave to an important location.

Both caves are already on public maps.

 

 This cave is located in Mystery Lake near the Clothing Cache.  The shortcut leads to Carter Hydro Dam.

 

The Kennel does allow a fire and a bedroll and is within reach of warmth bonus.

The fire is not wind proof.  Unable to build the Snow Shelter.

 

 The Kennel is located in Winding River on the path leading down from Carter Hydro Dam to Winding River.

Nice. I had not tried to build in that part of the cave. Good to know it works. Thank you!  

"Hilltop Hollow", since it is basically at the top of the hill, and really has no other distinguishing features. Other than what it might be near. 

Although I suppose I should F8 it to see what the game calls it, lol! 

 

Curious, was that slope the only place the campfire could be built? Every sloped area I tried gave me red, no green, but I was trying nearer to the entrance than you. Much more, lol!

The next hidden cave is another hole in the wall but with a remarkable view.  It does offer some wind protection, but with a roaring fire and comfy bedroll this accommodation can be a pleasant refuge.  The location is remote and the hike is treacherous but don't just come to sleep here you need to soak in the heart warming and incredible overlook of the lake.

Snow shelter accommodations are not available.

 

 

 The location is above Mystery Lake close to the cabins at the Western Access.

So, I had to go find the hilltop cave. I started a throwaway pilgrim to start on ML so I can just jog over and start looking for it. Along the way up I came across the Clothes Bunker; first time I'd ever been in there. That place is great!

Oddly my Pilgrim and I have also come across the bunker for the first time.

 

There are more Hidden Caves that I am aware of but for the sake of science I decided to thoroughly hunt them down.

The next few caves I found in the Mystery Lake region were merely wind breaks which will be documented later.

This next cave I was unaware of and is quite mysterious.

 

The mystery can be disturbing and can drive people mad  so it will not be posted and the "you have been warned message" has been illuminated.  For those who are willing, have nerves of steel and are determined to unravel the mystery I bid thee good luck.  This cave does offer some shelter from the wind and a bedroll can be placed by the fire. The large amount of fir, cedar, birch bark, branches and sticks that are nearby gives the location a major selling point.  Snow shelters are not available.

This location I am naming Via.

The thing is, there's lots of little nooks and crannies which can keep you alive through the night if you really need it.

The ^e X Nook is not a problem for Mountain Goats to reach this hide-a-way.  The strange markings on the rocks make this an interesting point of interest.  The fire is almost windproof.  No snow shelters allowed.

This Hobo Cranny might be a life saver.  The train no longer passes by but this area is fairly wind proof so keeping a fire going is not a problem.  The snow shelter does not fit here.

This catalogue should be about caves but where to draw the line. 

The factors relevant are:

has a roof

somewhat windproof

fire can be placed

After these are met I consider it acceptable for the list. 

The nook and cranny as listed above meet the criteria.  The Via nook is something special and should be listed with the caves. 

Caves are larger than nooks.  Nooks are larger than crannies.

This installment has two caves.  One cave was a disappointment and the other cave was fantastical.

The first cave looked promising as it appears to be an excellent wind break but no bed roll can be placed nor a snow shelter.  I even tried to place the bedroll outside on top of the cave to have a heated floor but that did not work either.  

 

 

Close by was another potential spot.  This area was magical though so a circle of salt might be needed.

Fire can be built that seems wind proof and a bedroll can be placed.  No snow shelter was attempted.

This area is by Broken Bridge

Another hidden cave that offers shelter from the elements. Windproof rating of 95% and place for the bed roll.  No snow shelters allowed.

 

Just make sure there are no critters hiding in the crevice.

 

Close to this cave is a cranny worth noting because it supports a snow shelter with a fairly wind proof fire near by.  This is a very useful cranny to rest before a labourious  journey.   A bed roll can also be placed to a fire that offers more wind protection.

This hidden cave was recently found.

 

Looks big enough for a wind proof fire and bedroll.  I need to test it with the snow shelter too.  Has anyone else found this?  The name of this spot is Tnoll.

You are on to it.  The funny thing is it probably been there since forever but I never saw it.  Most of the time I travel down that slop and it would be off to my left.  The cabin is close by and all downhill i usually just book it down there.  When going up I usually start from the trailer.   I have been more watchful for theses hideaways.

Take this goataway that was found today.  Makes for an interesting retreat.

The fire seems wind proof but ideally the trench would make a better spot. 

This spot offers no advantage from critters but the off trail leads to views can be spectacular.

You know, I need to get you to put these on my maps. As soon as I get finished moving, I got to get back to this. Wind proof locations for fires needs to be on the list. Maybe a little picture of the fire itself on the edge of the picture so you know what the location looks like.

Found this one on my 800+ day run (love still finding new things!).  I've circled the location on the map.

I have not started looking in FM, great find.  Since you @hozz1235  found the cave you can name it.  One important notable is in this cave can a snow shelter be constructed to make use of the windproof fire.

 

Here is another cave I found today.  If you like waking up to the smell of sea water and instead of the sound of a rooster cuck-a-doodle-dooing the wolves are howling than this place might be right for you.

The fire is windproof, the bedroll can be used.  No snow shelter accommodation. 

The Smugglers Cove

 

This cave is in Crumbling Highway down on the coast and backside of the cave near the Arch.

 

Could this be a wolf den?  They patrol not too far from here.

 

Too bad the snow shelter could not be used as this spot would be great for an interloper with no bedroll heading to/from DP.

In this grass was the only place for a snow shelter that I could find a location for it.

And you, FM cave, shall be known as "The Niche".  I know I can make a fire, but didn't try a snow shelter.

Nope, couldn't fit a shelter in the small space, but may not need one unless you have just the perfect wind direction coming in.  Why, oh why couldn't I hang a bear hide over the entry?
