If the hinterland cups are no longer microwave safe... why do we still find coffee in the microwaves!? What happens when the aurora flares up and activates the microwaves with this cup inside it!? 

With as many cups of coffee are in microwaves in this game it would cause a nuclear apocalypse! It's a disaster! We need to go on a mission to remove all coffee cups from microwaves in the long dark to save great bear!

That's what caused Wintermute.  Too many of those coffee mugs were heated up in microwaves at the same time.

Are we saying this is a set up done by Hinterland? Hinterland speedily distributing coffee mugs among great bearians claiming they were microwave safe, to disrupt the magnetic fields and so creating a perfect setting for a survival game!
