Saving outdoor

I thought that game saves when entering the hut. So I went out and in to save, then walked to exercise in the shooting. When sneaking towards the deer I sprained my wrist, then clicked escape to restart from the interior of my hut but the game was saved outdoor!  I was back on this hill with sprained wrist. My question is; when and how often the game saves itself?
