I heard some people find the pure sound of German "scarier" than English when spoken by a villain. I remember there was quite some fuss over the German WoW Cataclysm intro - most native English speakers liked Deathwings German voice better and most Germans the English one. I for one clearly preferred the English voice. :silly:

English:

German:

Ok, Im not that interesting but here goes...

1. Ive eaten the poisionous varient of sumac (luckily just a taste or two) and had a horrible night out in the woods. White berries are bad, not red!

2. I havent travelled much but I wish to visit New Zealand, the Rockies,  Alaska and the Yukon.

3. Witnessed an old tree make a death groan and fall over not far from where I was walking. It was terrifying!

4. I absolutely love wolves, you could call me a dog person, certain cats are ok too, (not the ones that just ignore you). Its interesting to see how similar, and so very different wolves and dogs are. For example, dog pups can use a human's gaze to pinpoint what they're looking for, (like a toy hidden under 3  cups) while wolf pups don't.

5. Im fascinated by Vikings and how swordfights are done so wrongly in films, (they use sporty moves when it usually just devolves into frantic hack and slash combat or hand to hand.)

6. I have asperger's and Attention deficit disorder.

7. TLD is my favorite video game, the soundtrack is phenominal and I absolutely love how the devs have handled the theme and tone so well.

8. I approach all choices and ideas with an air of eclectisism. In other words I look at both sides and all ideas and take what parts I think works best and put them together to make my own view on whatever Im looking  at. I avoid black and white thinking and retreat to the grey zones. Taking other's ideas wholely and without your own thought only leads to polarization and fuels arguments.

9. Im deeply interested in sociology, particularly the conflict theory, leaning towards Karl Marx's ideas.

10. Im bad at explaining/wording things so if any of you have questions Ill try to clarify what i listed off.

11. Oh, and Im a big sucker for music, I love all genres but I particularly like ambience, however, my favorite artist is Of Monsters and Men, they havent made a single song I dont like.

7. I am a passionate Magic the Gathering player, just recently rediscovered my love for it with Magic Duels (free to play, how awesome), sometimes I'm also a passionate chess player ;)

Strange coincidence. My Magic cards are sleeping a long sleep in my drawer. All my friends sold their cards, married and got kids. And I'm ashamed to go into a fantasy shop at my age to play against the kids. They probably wouldn't recognize my ancient cards anyway.

So here goes...

1. I can speak Japanese.

2. My father died from an illness this year, aged 72.

3. Also this year, I founded and/or co-founded three companies. One of them does artificial intelligence.

4. By freak coincidence, I got into occasional acting for TV productions just for the fun of it (maybe 2-3 times a year). So I've been on TV this year.

5. I have a PhD in law.

6. I can recite poems from memory for about 3 hours without repeating myself.

7. The video games I have the fondest memories of are Lords of Midnight, Unreal and Wing Commander I.

8. I have written a novel, numerous short stories and some poems.

9. I don't have family.

10. My hair started turning grey when I was 18.

I always find it funny how many specialist disciplines we have on the forums

I actually have a theory regarding that:

  1. TLD doesn't do much in the marketing department compared to AAA titles. You find the game, it doesn't find you.
  2. Those who seek out TLD look for a unique experience (and, if I may say so, find it ;))
  3. Those who come here sought out TLD and like it but often find it wanting in other areas (proof: The very existence of the wishlist and bug report forums)
  4. Those people are also used to engaging in constructive criticism and not abandoning things

In conclusion, the forums often attract people who use their debate skills in science, law and business because hey, that's just what they do. This does NOT imply that the "non-experts" are dumb or can't debate, just that the forums attract people who like debating and are good at it and they just more frequently but not always come from a professional background

Okay, here we go -

1. I found TLD by searching for video games that are like Survivorman.

2. I too cut my own hair.

3. I once loss control of my vehicle, rolled it, was thrown out, regained consciousness to see it wrapped around the trunk of a tree, then got up and walked three and a half miles back to the cabin I was staying at in a remote and heavily wooded area.

4. I absolutely love dogs and have yet to meet one that doesn't feel the same way about me.

5. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is one of my favorite books.

6. I have lived in Minnesota my entire life.

7. I can run really fast.  But only for really short distances.

8. I love pizza!  Any pizza.

9. I never, ever intentionally kill spiders.  I like them.  They eat up the other bugs.

10. I think Pink Floyd - The Wall is the best album ever made.

  • 3 weeks later...

Everyone except the professor showed up to the lecture, so here's another ten from me:

  • I have an unhealthy obsession with folding knives. Fortunately, I am too poor to afford too many of them since my girlfriend isn't on one wavelength with me on that one :D
  • During the exam for my fishing license I was so nervous the examiners almost called an ambulance. I passed tho!
  • My new RPG group starts today and I'm very nervous and excited! We're doing an anime-themed zombie-story in Japan. Yes, there will be quick but squishy schoolgirl-zombies.
  • I am usually a very patient person, but for some things such as buses I do not like waiting. This has oftentimes led to me walking for half an hour instead of waiting 10 minutes for the bus.
  • I am a firm believer of questioning everything. Wonder if that's good though....
  • For some reason, my survival beard stops growing after about two centimeters. Guess I won't be a survivor then.
  • My favorite brand of cigarettes is Benson&Hedges Black. I loathe John Player Special and Pall Mall and would rather not smoke at all than smoke these.
  • I like my coffee like my jokes: Black, bitter and served with love.
  • I used to collect variations of the Navy Seal copypasta but then found a subreddit that does that for me. Now I feel empty inside.
  • The owner of the mead stand at the local christmas fair knows me by name.

  4. I built a 16th c. crossbow.
  5. I was an actor for some time and worked with Tennessee Williams on one of his last plays.
  6. I like single malt whisky, but can't afford it.
  7. I built a couple dobsonian telescopes to see what's up there.
  8. I made a copper still (For distilling water of course.  I mean, you never know when you will need pure water).
  9. My favorite movie is Peter Brook's King Lear with Paul Scofield.
  10. My favorite poets are Pablo Neruda and Omar Khayyam.

Hinterland Team members usually leave these types of threads to you guys, but it looks fun, so...

  1. I grew up in northern British Columbia, so The Long Dark's setting feels quite familiar
  2. I fenced competitively as a teenager and was even part of Canadian team at the cadet world épée championships one year.
  3. I did not place well at that competition.
  4. After high school I considered a career in law enforcement, and studied Criminology in college. (it's super interesting)
  5. I'm a giant nerd and run an all-ladies tabletop role-playing game.
  6. I like to use my birthday as an excuse to do something weird/interesting. This year I'm visiting a palaeontology museum.
  7. I am very excited about Mars, and watched the live NASA coverage of the Curiosity Rover landing. The Martian is one of my favorite movies.
  8. For many years I did not like beer. Then I discovered dark craft brews.
  9. I would probably own the entire published works of Sir Terry Pratchett by now if I didn't keep "lending" books to people.
  10. My hair has been many, many different colors over the years. My favorite is rose, but I'm thinking of going back to my natural color for a while to remind myself what it looks like.

Here's 10 about me:

1. I have lived (briefly) in all but 4 states in the US but for some reason keep coming back to New England.

2. I love cats.  Dogs are cool too, but I'm really allergic.

3. My fondest memory is of my Grandfather who, to celebrate the fact I had glasses and could see properly for the first time, took me out to the Catskills on a very bitter winter's day to a spot where if we looked in one direction we could see a glint of Long Island Sound and if we looked in another direction we could see a cloud which was the breath of Niagra Falls.  Almost lost a toe, but it was worth it.

4. The only time I've cried for the sheer wonder of something was once during winter camping in Yosemite's backcountry when the night sky was so full of stars it was like I was swimming in starlight

5. I learned to ski about the same time I learned to walk

6. I can't ski any more and it breaks my heart

7. I can't hit the broadside of a barn when I'm shooting....unless someone makes me angry

8. I lost all my mousey brown hair due to chemo last year and when it grew back it was a glorious grey and black

9. Mountains are where I'm happiest, doesn't matter the size

10. I was in the scouts during a survival happy time, so I have actually voluntarily been dropped off as part of an unsupervised group on an island with only what we would be carrying if we were on a plane that had gone down.  What were my parents and all of the adults involved thinking? ;)

1. I own my own business.

2. My junior year in undergrad (in Tennessee), my accounting professor began the first day of class by announcing that Americans aren't interested in the rest of the world, and asked (apparently rhetorically) whether any Americans could name all the provinces of Canada. I raised my hand and said I could. Rattled off all 10, and the territories besides. The class applauded. I decided not to mention that I had done my first two years of college in Alberta. The professor later hired me to be a tutor for his class.

3. When my brothers and I were growing up we would ask our dad to teach us chess. He told us when we could beat him in checkers, he would teach us chess. One evening, my little brother finally played a game where he was doing pretty well. My older brother and I jumped in and started advising him, and he ended up winning. So my dad finally taught us chess. To this day, none of us has ever beaten him in chess (in fact, I've never seen anyone beat my dad in chess).

4. When I was about 4 or 5 my older brother and I decided we wanted to go camping. My dad set up an old pup tent in the back yard. Around midnight, after spending the entire night being eaten alive by giant Minnesota mosquitoes, we went back inside. It was a great adventure.

5. I play several instruments, but I am by far most proficient at playing drums. My favorite genre to play is jazz.

6. I have yet to find an area of history that does not interest me.

7. If you demanded that I pick a favorite style of food, I would find it difficult to choose between Thai and Japanese.

8. My wife and I are looking to get a dog in the near future. I'm looking to find something big enough to protect our family, active enough to go with me up into the mountains, and calm enough to keep me company while I work. I don't know if such a dog exists. If you have suggestions let me know.

9. Everything I have is from refusing to quit.

10. You can't take the sky from me.

1. Although I'm from the country, I grew up a day dreamer who spent most of his spare time reading fantasy novels and playing computer games. I never paid much attention to the world that was actually in front of my eyes. Now that I'm older I find the world of physical objects quite fascinating. I regret that I know very little about practical arts and sciences like mechanics, electronics, carpentry and the like. I admire technical people who can fix things and understand how things work. My father is one of these kinds of people who can fix a car, build a house, do his own plumbing or wire a light. I especially admire people who know a great deal about the outdoors. Maybe that is one of the reasons why I like games such as the Long Dark so much.

2. I'm from Australia. We had kangaroos visible from the window of my house. I envy people who live in places with a nice cool climate. I like the idea of camping in boreal forests. That would be a dream come true.

3. Inspired by Gunpoint, a couple of years ago I started using Game Maker in my spare time to try and make a little game. It's called Innkeep. www.innkeepgame.com.

4. I'm doing a PhD in philosophy. I'm looking at the 20th century tradition of comparative philosophy, as well as how this tradition was heavily influenced by biological metaphors of culture and thinking from the late 19th century and early 20th century (especially from pragmatism).

5. I wrote my masters degree in Japanese, at a Japanese university. I started learning at age 20, and started getting pretty proficient around ages 27-30.

6. I once worked as a translator and interpreter at an animation studio in Tokyo. The funnest part of the job was sitting in on teleconferences. Especially when there was a crisis going down with a project. Listening to somebody machine gunning some instructions for a minute or so, storing that in short term memory, then converting it over to the other language extra fast so that we could get through it all in the short time we had. This kind of challenge was quite exhilarating. Working with some famous brands and reading confidential communiques was pretty fun too.

7. My favorite game of all time is Ultima 7. I also loved the golden age of RPGs, Black Isle games, etc. But for the last five or six years I've found myself playing indie games almost exclusively. The Long Dark. Factorio. Subnautica. Battle Brothers. Kerbal Space Program. Project Zomboid. etc. Maybe its because the purity of the vision is free from the pressure of publishers to sell the maximum number of units, but I almost always prefer indie games over AAA games, and can rarely play a AAA game more than 5 hours before I get bored.

8. I have a really big translation project that is due tomorrow, and I am procrastinating by writing this right now. It's archaeology this time. About ancient an ancient civilization of the formative period in northern Peru.

9. My partner grew up in Shanghai. Her mother is an amazing cook. Her father taught himself investing and over twenty years it slowly helped get them out of poverty. He is gradually going blind now, but is still spending most days squinting at his laptop watching the stocks.

10. I like collecting good single malt whiskeys. I can't really afford it, so I drink very little though. ;-)
